Hi folks! I changed tactics. The previous sandbags were too compact, so I started scratch-building them again with a softer baggy like look.The main machine gun is covered and I now need to raise a little bit the walls on both sides and on the rear machine gun emplacement. Once I'm finished, I'll have to paint and weather the sandbags.

How'd you make those amazing little sandbags Felis? They are stunning, can't wait to see them completed and with the top all crowded with blokes and kit it should be stunning! Not to mention a dio would just add

It's been more than one week working with them damn sandbags; modelling them one by one with "Fimo" like white clay; it's been tough work because progress is slow and you get the funny feeling that you are kind of stuck. However!! I've been working at it intensely; so, it's been a bit.... frustrating, I hope the final effect is worth the effort Finally; I finished modelling those sandbags, but when I started priming and painting them... again.... I faced some difficulties, the croc is already painted and I have to proceed millimetrically in order not to spoil my previous work. It's really time consuming... Without a deadline I would just go on happily without any care, but with December around the corner my idea of building a diorama is less certain... Don't missundersand me! I'm having a helluva time with the build, and tight schedules help you wake up and work tough and that's great, but... well...you know what I mean don't you?

Vietnam GB "The Croc's Nest" Update 4

My cat didn't like the look of those Tamiya sand bags....and neither did I






So, I decided to scratch build them with white clay. I wanted them smaller and a more adaptable






I liked the look of them, but...as soon as I started covering the machine gun turret...






...I realised they looked too big and sturdy on the deck






So.. I removed them and started the process all over again. I made them smaller and more baggy like






They looked definitively better, so I started raising the side walls, gluing those bags with white glue






At mid construction , while the white clay was still soft, I checked figure positions and made tiny corrections






Walls were raised a little bit more and more possible positions were rehearsed






Garbage bags!!? No.... it's just black primer..LOL






Those garbage bags didn't look bad, but I decided to cover them with Sand Yellow (Vallejo)






This is the first layer






...and the second layer






Done. Now it needs shadows and lights...






There we are. A dark wash is the only thing left






And that's it. I've used AK Grime diluted with white spirit





















Ok. In the next update I'm going to deal with the machine guns and the crew

The figures are superb! Right gear and all (I used to do some USMC Vietnam inf. battle display/reenactment). If I see correctly you even did the helmet-bands in black - something every movie ever gets wrong. Hats off to you sir!

Thanks mate! Before attacking the figures I researched US Marine Vietnam equipment. There were no instructions in the Hobby Boss box so I checked canteens/pouch positions and colours. I also discovered insect repelent plastic bottles and those black rubber bands. It was a bit challenging because I didn't have pre-established ideas. I even got photographs from reenactments like the ones you used to do. It's indeed a very interesting gear and I've had a great time recreating it. Cheers mate I'm glad you like it!

Vietnam GB LVTP5A1 Update 5 & Final Reveal

We left it here. I started building the 50 cal. machine guns





They are quite detailed with some photo-etched parts





The front one is going to have a hanging ammo belt





I built the resin figures from Hobby Boss





I primed them with black primer





Then I painted them with a combination of cam. light green and Us dark green





I tried again some positions inside the nest. It's quite crowded!





I researched colours and positions of Marine equipment





So, I used different combinations of khaki and dark green changing colour proportion for the equipment and the vests





I also needed more information about their foot wear and colour combination





Thus, I painted the boots acordingly mixing khaki and black brown





I tried to recreate the helmet camo and plastic bottles





There it is. I also painted cards and cigarettes





I added shadows using basically black brown combined with the original base colours





I added flesh...





and then I applied a dark wash





I had some doubts about M16 colours, so I tried to reproduce this sample





M60 and 16 have been painted with a combination of iron, black metal and gun metal





Some handles had to be sawed and I glued weapons with superglue





I made some changes in their positions and...





...added straps





Finally I dabbed some pigments on their boots and clothes





I glued them on their definitive positions....





I was happy with the result





So I uploaded a teaser...love them...LOL





After teasing a bit, I decided to go on with ammo boxes and stuff





These Plusmodel crates conatin resin parts, wood and decals





Here they are





The LVTP5 was already too crowded, so I selected just a few important elements





I primed them





and finally I painted them and added a wash





That's it. After seeing these slurries on this photograph I decided to add them. The model is finished!!

Beautiful work on the track.. I've always wonded how that kit would build up and you did an excellent job, an the paint an weathering is very nicely done as well.. the Sharkmouth really brings her to life, good job.. the sandbag additions are wonderful also.. class A tracked machine there for the time period.

I do have a couple questions though...

why did you chose to use the aircraft version of a 50 cal for the front, when they were not typically used on ground armor by US troops. Photos I've seen on the net as well from photo albums of Marines who were around these tracks never showed an aircraft version being mounted to the top. just the standard M2 and a few with the jungle muzzle clipped on.


why use a 240MG to represent an M-60, 240 isn't a Nam era weapon at all and there is a huge difference between the two.. I carried a "pig" roughly 6 years before they were totally phased out of the Army.


Please understand I'm not trying to trash the great work you've put into this build at all, the track is wonderful and is truly beautiful, but the small minor things drew my attention.

If that's the aircraft version then this is entirely my fault. Let's leave it as an artistic license For the 240MG blame Hobbyboss for including it with the Vietnam Marines. I didn't detect the difference, they look so similar! Cheers!
