Nice work on this so far. I'm currently working on the "Bicentennial Phantoms" version of this kit right now. Because of the paint scheme, I didn't try to enter it in the group build. But, I've completed the cockpit and assembled the ejector seats (to be installed later). The PE is so tiny. It looks nice, but was a major headache.

Just a word of caution on the seat belts. They lay really nice. But, the colored paper pulls away from the fabric very easily. I had to paint over a couple of the belts in Deck tan. Regardless, the ejector seats in general are a marvel. Even though it was very difficult I enjoyed the challenge. Looking forward to the rest of your build.

Great thread Mark. I was planning on participating in this GB, but have just been too busy with work the last few months. This kit is one of the ones that I was planning on entering.

Great tips and will continue to watch.

hi guys and welcome to the 4th update for this build
last time the build was well underway and the cockpit was about the last thing that needed work

so here we go

Image
i started with the photo etch of the canopy
when you have this kit or the pe set that is in this kit keep in mind that the pe parts on the edges of the canopy will cause to get a bad fit
or even no fit at all as the parts will make the canopy bigger so you will have to choose
use the pe and keep the canopies open (my choise)
or leave the pe off and make a closed canopy

Image
then they where there ,the seats
they are made from 2 resin parts
i painted them in the colors from the instructions

Image
Image
how they look after the first pe parts

Image
i then started to dry brush the seats
for this i mixed vallejo olive drab and ivory in a 3:2 ratio to make a green(ish)grey
this was applied on the olive drab seats
but later turned out to be a good color for dry brushing the black aswell

Image
the effect on the black parts

Image
Image
Image
and the finished seats
they look very nice i must say and i am very happy with them
too bad they will be hidden for the most part

Image
i then returned to the canopy pieces
the pe was primed and painted
the eduard mask set was also used
they are easy to use and save a lot of time comparred to cutting them your self

Image
the internals where painted and dry brushed aswell

Image
the dry brushing went on with the edges of the canopy

Image
the front and middle parts of the canopy where glued on the fuselage
the refueling rod was masked and installed aswell

Image
to be on the safe side i applied some more masking tape on the canopies
so they are completly covered

Image
then 1 final change
i cut the pointy fuses of 6 bombs and replaced them with the extended fuses

Image
final bit of masking is done

Image
and then everything was put on sticks and is now ready for priming and painting

and that is all i have for now
i hope you like it and untill next time
thanks for watching
cheers Mark

The painting should be different as all the colored places (other then grey) are painted that way and not decalled

Thank you very much Alex
I think wingy things are a nice change every now and then
I only started making planes again this year but it where planes that got me into the hobby in the first place
And i think you don't have to build only armor or planes ,just build whatever you want and keep the funlevel up in the proces

Image
hello jolly people of modelling land
so this is the new update for my Phantom build
it has been a little while since the last update ,even though have been working on this build almost every day
but with the use of a new brand of paint and the tons of masking and the drying times that are needed before i can mask anything it had all taken up a lot of time
and with a few set backs wich where all my own doing it had taken even longer

but anyways here is the painting process so far

Image
after the exterior was primed using ammo for mig primer (grey)
i started with the pre shading
this was done with black on all the parts that would get the grey base color later on

Image
the bottom wich is going to be white is pre shaded with a grey paint
this was done after some consultation on facebook because i wasn't sure if that would work and to cover black with white would take a lot of layers

Image
the 2 pre shading paints
the grey is normally used as a basecolor for the F-15 ,according to the bottle

Image
the white places on the top where also pre shaded

Image
the bottom after 8 coats of white
the pre shading is now barely visible altough in this photo almost invisible
each layer was allowed to dry for atleast 8 hours
a bit on the safe side but again i never used mr hobby aqueous paints before

Image
after i was happy with the white it was time for some masking
and then the wavy lines on the lower part of the fuselage to be precise
i rolled out some white tac (overhere it is called poster buddy) into worms for this

Image
and applied them like this

Image
while all that was done the wingtips where also painted aswell as the steering/control surfaces
these where then masked off to prepare for the base coat of the upper parts

Image
all ready for some painting
the tail is not covered or painted at this point ,only the tip of the tail was painted because this is needed for the VF-84 version and was painted at the same time as the wingtips
it will be masked later when i get to the point of painting the tail in black

Image
the base coat was applied
this covers very well and after just 2 coats i was happy with the result

Image
the pre shading is still visible but the grey really helps to pop up the details on the wings

Image
the bright yellow tail before masking

Image
the tail ready for paint
at this point i haven't used that much masking tape on this build
but at the moment i think i crossed the 150 cm mark

Image
just like the tail the nose is painted black
this part of the masking work requires some cutting of the tape
i think it is well known with most modellers but just to make sure : use a new and sharp knife when working on the masking
this helps to get sharp cuts without getting nasty remains that form these little pointy bits that are almost inpossible to get away

Image
the nose is painted black

Image
the tail was then masked again
this time it is needed for the leeding edge of the tail this is going to be grey like the fuselage

Image
all that masking for this little stripe of grey

Image
the interior of the speed brakes or air brakes is masked to prepare for the red paint that will go on there

Image
the painted brakes

Image
all the masking tape was then removed

Image
the front of the plane

Image
the tail section

Image
a full view of the painted Phantom
the metal parts are not painted at this point but that will be in the next update
the weapons are prepared but are going to be painted aswell before the next update
my goal is to get the entire build ready for the decals but time will tell how that will go

and that is all i have for now
i hope you like it so far
thanks for stopping by and untill next time
cheers Mark

It is my 5th plane this year so i'm still learning a lot

Too bad the Aqueous white is such a crappy paint
I have had some trouble with it and yesterday i damaged it again
So i sanded it down and will be using some tamiya white to repaint the white parts

Amen to that. Hate the 316 white. But I'm too far into it to change colors now. Curious as to how the tamiya will look thought.

Thanks Weasel
I don't really mind the 316 anymore
I finally figured out how i can use it altough it does go slow
But i really don't like H1 maybe i have a bad bottle but that stuff is like spraying badly colored thinner
It doesn't even dry properly
But i will have to order paint and i have a list of a few other paints and some small items
Too bad my go to shop doesn't have all the items in stock at this moment
So it can take up to 3 weeks according to their website
But they have proven to be faster in the past
And i can finish of some other parts of this build first and i have other builds too to keep me busy

Thank you very much Felis
Too bad this build is on hold at the moment
My paint should arrive today or tomorrow according to UPS so that is good
But i suffer from severe redecorating at the moment and all modelling is off for this week at least
But once the dust has settled i will be back at the bench wich will be hopefully the upcoming monday and then painting and a bunch of figures are the first thing i will take care of
Thanks for the kind comment
Cheers Mark

hi guys
so finally a new update for this build
altough not very big
most of the work went into repearing damaged paint caused by scratches and overspray
but i did finish the painting stages today so i will take it up to that point

so here we go

Image
the bare metal of the rear section
this is painted with mr metal dark iron wich was then buffed to a shiny finish

Image
a different angle of the same section

Image
this is the wing surface after the normal painting

Image
although very hard to see here
i have bleached the panels to fade the centres of all the panels
i mixed the base color H325 grey and h316 they where mixed in a 3:1 ratio

Image
the fuelrod was painted aswell
the tube is painted with mr metal chrome silver and the head is painted in mr metal stainless steel

Image
the holding points for the bombs are painted with the stainless steel aswell
according to the instructions everything else should remain white
so a wash should improve the look later on

Image
i don't have a close up but here you can see the color difference on the horizontal stabilizers
the dark area's are painted in mr metal dark iron ,the lighter places are painted in the mr metal stainless steel

some photo's of the finished paint work
this is the basic finish for the version i am building
the last details will be added by using decals like the vegabonds (stripes on the sides and top of the fuselage) and the skull and cross bones on the tail

then i went on to paint the weaponry

i first started with the aim-7 and aim-9 missles
Image
the first color is white
according to the instructions both kinds of missles should be overall white with the heads in other colors

Image
but after some searching on google i found that most of thes weapons have stripes on them
although all kinds of colors used i picked a darker blue and the same yellow that is used on the wing tips
so i started masking

Image
the same goes for the sidewinders

Image
the sparrows after painting and removing the masking tape
the caps in the nozzles are painted yellow to represend the plastic caps that are put in there to keep dirt and dust out
the heads are painted with a standard grey for the US Navy (forgot wich one)

Image
the sidewinders are painted in the same way
the heads are painted with mr metal silver for the light part and stainless steel for the darker part
the instructions call for the use of h8 silver but the mr metal has a nicer finish in my opinion

Image
the mk.82 bombs where painted in olive drab and the flat parts at the base of the fuse where brush painted with mr metal stainles steel
i tried to get some yellow stripes on there but they looks bad to me so i repainted them like this

and that concludes this update
the Phantom is now ready for the decals as i have clear coated it with floor wax

next time i will have the decals on there and it should be ready for the the final weathering
i plan on adding the canopies last after i matte coated the plane
this is because the masking tape on them is hard to remove once they are glued on the plane
so that will be the last step
also the pylons and fueltanks are added after the decalling and weathering for easy access

so i hope you like it so far and i should have the next update soon
thanks for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

Thanks guys
The mr metals aren't that hard to work with in my opinion
You will have to spray them and have to polish/buff like a maniac but it lolks rewarding in the end
