Hey Leo, thanks for taking a look buddy.. As a kid growing up in the 70's, Airfix or MPC/Ertl were my models of choice.
I think its the childhood link that keeps tempting me back to such poorly moulded kits! lol...

That and the hope to turn a bad kit into something worth looking at! lol...

The main part of the build will be the Scammell parked out front dropping off some Armour so the building needs to be busy but not distractingly busy! lol...

So as mentioned above, I still have loads of stuff to do, but I am further along than posted...

My problem is finding time to post up progress, so it may well be a long post again... Sorry...

Building the Grant.....

Same age as me!!

Making bogies.....

Lots of teeny bits....

Drilled out the main gun barrel....

Now the moulding on both turrets around where the gun mantle fits is atrocious...Really bad...

In and in need of some filler...

Slowly coming together now....

Exhausts drilled though you wont see these once the hull is complete...

See.....American Turret is worse than the British one!!...

Filler applied!!

Building the upper hull....

...and hidden away.... but i know they drilled out....

Dry fit before the main gun goes in...

An old chain off my little girl that may be just about in scale for chaining the Tank to the Scammell....

So a quick blast over with the thick, cheap auto primer... not ideal for small scale, have to use it so sparingly, but it gets a dark undercoat on..

...and i will end tonights fumble with the braille scale here..
Over the next few days i WILL post up the diorama construction and the creation of my little Paper palm tree...

Hahaha...One of my aims here on this thread seems to be to Build all the Airfix tat, with all its faults and crap quality... So you guys don't have too! lol...

Thanks Leo.. The Grant is finished all bar the dusting and flat coat. No major weathering as it is to portray the first British M3 Grant being delivered to Tobruk so has seen no action yet.. Just a slight panel line wash and some dust is all its getting..

Some Barracks/Headquarters with sandbags and a couple of squaddies on the roof along with a couple of Tank commanders and engineers backing the Scammell up outside to show off the brand new lend/lease Tank..

So on that note I may well show some diorama building 1/76 scale.....

I have shown a glimpse on a previous post of the base and constructed the building during that post, but think a more picture heavy demonstration is needed!

lol....

An old picture frame and some low density "Pink" foam is cut and PVA glued in place. I intend to use powder Decorators filler, Aquarium sand and broken filler bits to portray a desert type road/clearing outside the HQ/Barracks of the Australian regiment based at Tobruk.. The pictures I took inspiration from are these couple here...

Stealing a couple of elements from both scenes and using artistic licence I have created my own interpretation. Along with the Kit Missing sand skirts on the M3 please Rivet counters... be gentle with me! lol...

Starting point of the small base..

One bowl of mixed filler...

A sprinkling of fine grain sand and....

The foamcore building gets the remaining filler applied to its walls....

Once dry the building gets a coat of Artists white Acrylic paint..

Now while the ground was still wet I added some track marks...

... and then decided I needed a tree for the side of the building. A big leafed Palm tree to be precise. I discussed white metal Palm trees in 1/76 scale with a fellow forum member at Telford the other weekend.. ( hey Rich, how ya doing buddy??)... and we came to the conclusion they were damn expensive for what they are, Richard even suggested printing leaves out to scale and cutting them out and fixing to a trunk... Well after searching the net for Braille scale Palms. I discovered a couple of website listing DIY trees at 1/35... I used their info and built my own...

The War factory style was used and adjusted to suit my needs....

I took some freezer bag wire ties like these...

Stripped out the wire...

Using common masking tape i placed the wire inside a sleeve of tape like so....

Using scissors I cut a palm leaf shape and added the cuts up the leaf.

Making smaller and larger ones for the lower larger and upper smaller leaves...

Once cut I positioned them placing the smaller leaves in the center.
Using a textured dead clipping from a conifer in the garden, I removed the dead leaving just the main branch. using the wire from the freezer bag ties again, I twisted it around the top to secure the leaves and cut off any overhanging wire...

You can see the wire at the top here.. I clipped off the extra, dropped some CA glue down the center of the leaf bunch from the top. then once dried, using a thin sliver of masking tape, wrapped over the wire giving the palm tree overlap texture at the top...

I also used some grassy type bits to simulate the dried grassy type bits atop the tree like this....

While the tree dried and before I undercoated it, I added some shutters to the buildings windows using Coffee stirrers..

...and I think I may have bored you guys enough by now! lol....
Hope my demonstration has given food for thought when building a desert scene and needing some inexpensive palms...
Gotta love the Internet for the wealth of info it provides or can inspire...

This is once again, superb Wappystyle stuff!
I remember my first try at Palm trees, they're not an easy thing. I was silly and chose the big scalely truck type that I had to aphand sculpt. Though I wish that I'd seen how you did these palms earlier.
You made the, sooooo simple bud.
I'll be using your method for my next ones.
Every thing else is just plan awesome Andy.
I can't wait to see where you go next with it, in typical Wappyfashion!

If i can make a half decent 1/76 scale Palm following the techniques found, you real modelling masters will build forests of near lifelike Palms i'm sure..

My builds will never win prizes, but i do try and entertain the viewer with my Wappyfashion threads... Picture flood anyone?? lol. Those Palm tree tutorials and demo's are excellent. The Interweb has given the community an awful lot of knowledge at its fingertips. I enjoy taking sourced ideas and customizing to suit.
So much to do... so little time to do it... but with encouraging words and positive comments from you guys here at ISM, i think its all but finished!

Warning.... Image flood posting.. Again....

Hi guys, prewarned above just incase this thread gets a little busy as we go!
Straight in with a picture or three of the chosen mixed bag of figures i will be using on the display..
Matchbox, Airfix and MMS White metal to be exact..

Not the best, and not gonna be painted the best by a long shot but to dress the scene this collection will do...

Here are a couple of "Primer" pictures of the Grant...

...and the dio tree before paint...

Primed....

While all that primer is drying i choose Revell Ochre for my Desert paintwork and spray up the Cab and trailer of the Scammell..

...then first coated all the flesh on the figures....

...and added an Aerial on the turret. The American Lee version had its Radio equipment in the lower hull... Also still experimenting with a suitable similar but different colour for the Grant...

The Palm gets an Earth Brown and Dark green paintjob to both trunk and leaves...

.....Finally settled on the same paint colour as the Scammell but will keep it spick and span.. nor dings, rust, chips or dirt.. The Scammell however will be worn and well used...

Starting to fix the drive sprockets etc....

...and the wheels are fixed to the Scammell for painting and gloss coat..

Pins have been added so i can steel cable the ramps up in the hauling position...

Grant Bogies get some rubber on.....

and finally its starting to take on the required look....

...and Finally for this post, while the paints are drying i finish off the diorama base with some details....

Just needs some paint and a little more sand to finish off.
I have made loads of Miliput sandbags to dress the building up a little, more about them next post.
Hope i haven't bored anyone to death with my picture flooding... Sorry if i have, just how i get carried away trying to show a scene or a part/technique from different angles for the viewer..

Fingers crossed for finishing it off over the next week or so, mind it is only busying the scene up and finishing figures.... 1/76 scale is all about scratch building I've found as most after market gear is aimed at the 1/35 scale modellers...
....also Airfix needs lots of detailing to make it half okay!! Lol..

Warning... VERY long picture intense post bringing the thread Bang up to date...

Ha.... prewarned above as is the norm for a Wappystyle post... lol.... Please try and stick with it, i promise you'll enjoy the post!!

So i posted some sneak peek photos on the Facebook page earlier this week showing where i am at in real time with the build.. As we are 2 weeks from end date i best catch up on the build thread before its final reveal time!

So.... Sandbags, Milliput style at 1/76 scale...... just a representation really, not accurate just made quickly and simply by rolling mixed milliput into a rolled sausage shape, then cutting, squashing flat and marking for effect..

Paint wise i think Vallejo Hemp and a lamp black oil wash to finish...

Matchstick Grant pictures for Eryk....

A quick layout check....

...then detail painting on the Grant..

While the Black Oil wash was out, and after a gloss coat and decalling...(only 2 used!)...

.....and the building too!!

Then on to the weathering and paint chipping effects on the Scammell.....
Using a brush and some German Grey by Vallejo, along with some wet and dry sandpaper to give the worn look, i started on the trailer....

Battered and scraped to hell!!!

Matchstick photos for Eryk....

Nearly there..... flat coat needed....

Colin is still in there!!.....

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice some painting had been done on the sand floor along with an airbrush or two full of Ultimate Sand wash to give a dusty finish to the ground..

The Matilda II just casually rolling past......

...and finally for this extra long post....... Some dress up time...... No not that type of dress up... lol..... I mean detail the scene a little....

Chains.......

REAL Grease on the trailer plate/bed......

Trailer stowage, steel cables, wooden chocks and some barrels made from old PCB resistors.....

Tin foil wrapped over some milliput squares to represent covered boxes etc...

Needs lashing down so cotten painted and CA glued underneath will work fine....

Finally, trailer ramps fixed in the transport position and steel cables added for effect...

...and Grant in place.....

...including the little red flag atop of the radio antenna.....

...and breath........ We are officially bang up to date with the build....

Fingers crossed for one more up date next week before a final reveal between Christmas and the New Year....

Thanks Eryk, Sorry for all the pictures, this next post will be almost picture free. The last post was a massive update on the build so took many images to get to where it was at... As for backgrounds, i do just snap pictures where i am at at the moment. For final reveal i will add some blank background cover to enhance the build buddy. Cheers Sef, glad you enjoyed my Thread buddy, much appreciated. Building at 1/76 cures all the storage problems, but gives such a headache and causes untold frustration when trying to detail up so small!... I think the cheap, low detailed figures are the worse part, as you will see shortly.

Hey Nige, Hope Christmas has been a good one for ya mate, and thanks for finding the time for a look at my build mate. Much appreciated... as far as the chain goes, maybe a quick Rust wash or dust wash, nothing special... Figures at 1/76 are my heartache... so, so poor quality, or you get excellent quality but they cost more than figures in 1/35...
You'll see after this, i have muddled through and done what i can... Let me know what ya think if you get the chance.. Thanks again mate, all the best...

...and finally...... the last post of the build thread.... and its "All about the figures, 'bout the figures, no treble!"... erm ... i mean... the little guys, all lined up getting painted, detailed, glossed, washed, dusted and matt coated......

After all the detail painting done i coat them with a quick cheap aerosol gloss lacquer....

Once glossed and left to cure, i give a quick oil pin wash then flat coat once dry with Vallejo Matt varnish...

...and thats it for now folks.....
As far as i can tell the SiG ends on the 9th of January, i will post up a final reveal before that date with lots of images.
Until then, thanks for all the posts and encouragement guys, i am truly grateful for all the support you guys offer.

I do actually like this build, for a piece or two of Airfix tat, its all scrubbed up quite well with the added detailing...
