Airfix Spitfire MkIIA 1/72

Post by Gav0909 »

So I bought this on a whim the other day as I fancied trying out one of Airfix's new tool Spits (built a MkVb a few months back which is still a 1970's tooling). She will be built OOB as a quick build.

Here are some WIP snaps up to preshading.

Cockpit halves and other "inside" bits airbrushed Humbrol 90, chipped with some Citadel Boltgun metal and then washed with Devlan Mud (most of which was removed to leave it in the recesses).

Fuselage went together nicely, only thing I had to do was to drill the locator pin holes a touch bigger as the fit was a touch too tight on the pins.Image

Only a touch of filler needed, some of which was due to slight heavy handedness by me when removing the parts.

Primed with Vallejo Grey Primer, and pre-shaded with Vallejo German Grey (neatest pre-shading I have managed! Its a new thing to me)

How are you finding Liquid Green Stuff over traditional filler like Tamiya's?

Its ok for shallow gaps/imperfections as its so easy to manipulate. Plus it can be thinned with water so you can wash/paint it over rough areas to smooth them out. For larger gaps a thicker putty is probably more suited still. You get a bit of shrinkage with the liquid GS as well.

I have recently started using Vallejo filler, its pretty good for nice straight gaps between parts, as while its still wet it can be cleaned up with a wet cotton bud, which makes it quick and easy to use. There isn't much shrinkage with it either.

I was just going to ask about the filler too, that's citadels filler isn't it

Great job on the build, I think i have built this kit, it's a good little kit builds up nicely

What paints are you using for your Camo scheme?

I am a huge fan of the Vallejo filler. It isn't sticky in the same way my Tamiya one is and for me its just nicer to use.

It is really easy to use, another one simialr to vallejo, is Perfect plastic putty, works just like it but with less shrinkage

The one thing I dislike about the Vallejo stuff is that it doesn't sand as nicely as the Liquid GS does, even after a good long drying time. Which is why its best to wipe off the excess while its wet still, rather than put on excess and sand back later.

if I may, I have just purchased a new (to me) product, it's called glazing putty. It's made by 3M and it's a lot cheaper!!! you find it in the auto detailing dept. at any retail stores, it does shrink a little but it sands very smooth. I am in the states so I don't know if it's the same in other countries.

Gav, it's looking great brother!! kutgw!!

We get 3M stuff here Luis, so will have to keep an eye out for that next time I am in the market for more filler!

So I have been working on the Spit this evening. She now has a coat of colour! Humbrol 90 on the lower surfaces, with Vallejo Model Colour Flat Earth and Reflective Green used for the camo pattern. In the bottom photo I have just put a coat of Klear over the model prior to a light wash (preshading worked well in the deep panel lines that a proper wash would be overkill I think). I usually airbrush the Klear over, but have had issues with it clogging up my airbrush despite my best efforts to clean it out, so just brushed it on this time. There will be a final matt coat later which will even it all out etc anyway.

Cheers
