Global Scale Modeller

Building this for the "Actung Panzer" GB over on Britmodeller.Now when it comes to a scheme, it had to be the 11th Hussars - the original Desert Rats.

Work begins with the Engine - loads of small parts but does build up nicely with some care





Then sprayed flat black, drybrushed, some details picked out, and weathered with some AK / MIG / Ammo Engine Grime, Fresh Oil, Engine Grease enamels / oils







It's got some older oil seeping out of the gaskets, fresh oil near the filler and a small leak from the oil pump

Today's work - started by finishing off the engine, adding the exhaust manifolds ( Rusted with pigments - will need more work once the rest of the exhaust system is fitted ), and the Radiator and coolant pipes.





Then started on the main Subframe with the transfer box and the linkages for the gear change and drive selectors. Weathered with some drybrushing and once again Mig / Ammo Engine grime and Oil stains.





It's all very nice but also all very tiny

The aluminium is alclad aluminium

Today's work - started assembling the main chassis - starting with the two main I-Beams



Then added the cross members



Sprayed primer over the chassis, then a coat of Light Stone, before fitting the engine and main cabin floor.





Finally for the day, fitted the engine bulkhead, engine air filter, and the driver's seat. Base painted, but will need weathering later.

Today's work - started with something a bit different. I assembled the Modular Workshop System pieces I bought - very impressed with these, easy to assemble and work well to organise all the incredibly important stuff you accumulate.

Then started work on the Humber again. First made up one of the fuel tanks, sprayed with Alclad Aluminium and weathered



Then added most of the driver's controls - still have one pedal to fit, and the steering wheel. Also weathered up the interior as well.

Today's efforts from sleety Yorkshire - it is strange trying to think hot and dusty for weathering when you get soaked and freezing on every trip to the shed. Anyway started with the fitting of the final driver's pedal, and the Steering wheel.



Next fitted the exhaust system - Painted dull brown then weathered with Rust pigments



Then construction moves to the springs and the differentials. Loads of tiny bits, including 2mm wide working spring hangers that just love to catapult around



Finally sprayed it all alclad steel, then fitted the lot and added the prop shafts. This hasn't been weathered down at all yet.

Today, more fiddly bits for the sides - first the left side



Then the right side



Then sprayed the base coats - Light stone on the bottom sections, and white on the top halves.





This needs to cure before I can start weathering and the detail painting.

Today's work on the humber - first added base painting for the details on the sides





Then fitted the sides to the chassis ( with a modicum of bad language - it's quite a tight fit, and needed gluing in sections as there's no good way to clamp them ), then weathered the sides down, matted, and added some dust.





Now need to fit the two side doors temporarily - for this use Copydex. This is a latex based adhesive, so is tacky but allows you to remove parts easily later. You can also use it for masking areas as well



So the doors in place, and Light stone sprayed on the inside of the wheel wells

Great work so far, mate

Day off today so got some more done.

First the upper hull - add all the details to the sides, then painted and weathered





Then glued the upper hull to the lower hull - this required some 'persuasion' - not a bad fit just required constants pressure to dry





Built up the drivers vision hatch



Then copydexed into the vision port

Today's work - started with making some Wheel masks using my Craft Robo. Cut out 15.6mm disks on Vinyl masking material



Then made up the wheels



Then sprayed the Light Stone, masked off, then sprayed the Dark Rubber



Then followed a couple of hours of intemperate language to fit the wheels, hook up the brake lines, wrestle with the steering arms and fit the front dampers. It's not that the fit is bad, it's just that it's all very fiddly - like everything on this kit







Getting there now - still loads to do though but at least all the running gear is done now.

Today's work - first started with the inside of the engine cover, complete with crank to release the catches. Sprayed white, then added metal for the screw followed by some weathering and oil



Fitted the radiator covers then put the engine cover in place with Copydex again. Then added the PE hangers for the tools using Gator Grip.



Next the frames for the 'flimsies' - soldered these rather than glued as there isn't a lot of contact area



Made up the mud guards, and slotted the flimsies in place - they will be painted separately later



After spraying the inside of the mudguards with light stone, fitted them to the main body





Finally added the hanging loops on the front, and the main headlight. Leaving off the wing mirrors at the moment, as they WILL get broken off if I added them now.



So that's the main body done now all 35 stages of it - only the turret to do now - about another 15 stages

Great to see a expert at work. Some much craftmanship. Like seeing a painter work.

Today's work - started the turret. As is normal with this kit, lots of details including tiny mills bombs. Soldered the PE ammo box rather than gluing.





Next up fitted the 2 MG's - I did manage to lose the the 15mm so had to scratch build a replacement using plastic stock, undoubtedly the original will now turn up.



Quick coat of Mr Surfacer 1200 over everything



Sprayed white, then picked out the details and weathered

This is a combination of the work i did last sunday, and todays work.
First sundays work - started on the turret seats



About that time when I turned around I managed to catch my thumb on the corner of one of my toolbox cutting it - that cut short Sunday's work.

Today have the day off, and my thumb is a more normal size so continued with the turret. Painted the turret seats, added the Bren gun ammo, and the radio. Annoyingly as I was spraying one of the PE guards for the radio I managed to lose it, so there's only one. Also added the small lamp.



Closed up the turret - you can still see some of the details through the hatches





Then finally out with the copydex to attach the gunner and commander's hatches temporarily

More work today

First added the radio antennae hosts, and the PE sun compass ( without the needle which will be added later ), and the gun barrels and covers.



Next the AA bren gun mount



Masked off the wheels, then sprayed Mr Surfacer 1200 to prime everything



A coat of Light Sand over everything



Then the Black disruptor scheme





Klear over the top, then the decals





Definately a Desert Rat now

Today's work - first off adding some chipping



Then a light brown filter over the top



While the filter was drying, I painted the tools and then fitted them, and the sand channels





Then some streaking dirt



Finally a flat coat over the top







Ready for dusting up next weekend, still have the flimsies to paint and add, and the hatches to open up.

Today's work on the Humber - first started with AK Africa Dust and Dust Effects to give a base line for the dust





Then added the Flimsies - Grey for Fuel and White for water, complete with leaks... they weren't called Flimsies for nothing. Did manage to knock off the front headlamp, but scratched a replacement.





Finally more dust, opened up the side doors and the hatches and the engine bonnet. Also fitted the replacement headlamp and the antennae.







Will take the final RFI photos later after I've had a break
