Global Scale Modeller

Hello guys!
Taking a break from all AFV I normally do, and decided to enter with this plane.
Now, I am not a plane modeller, so way out off my comfort zone here
But I think i'm going to enjoy this build
I'm using AM Photo etch, this time the coloured PE from revel that is designed for this kit.
I know that the canopy for this kit sucks big time because of the big join taps being very prominent in sight of the glass.
I haven't found a replacement canopy for it just yet, but I know I will find one during this build.

Some history...

The Ar 196 was a shipboard reconnaissance aircraft built by the German firm Arado starting in 1936. The next year it was selected as the winner of a design contest, and became the standard aircraft of the Kriegsmarine throughout World War II.

The Arado Ar 196 was the best float-plane of the Second World War. It flew attacks against U-Boats as well as Coastal Reconnaissance Missions and the there-with associated attacks on small inshore vessels. Most aircraft of the Ar 196A-3 Series went to Coastal Aviation Groups as well as to various Maritime Reconnaissance Groups and larger ships.

This is the base that came with the kit.
I do not now if i'm using it. It would be awesome to put this plane into water, but that is something I'm not deciding now.

As for the canopy, I just ordered a resin replacement by Alley cats models.
Not familiar with them, but will see if it comes across the pound or not.

A small update, but that's mainly because this instrument panel you are going to see took me whole afternoon to build!
Loads of small parts, but no paint required for this is coloured photo etch, so that's nice.
Needed to sand down all moulded details like I did with the radio panels in previous update, so no pic of that....
Instead of using CA glue, I used Kristal klear to glue to etch this time. It gave me a lot more time to get the parts in the correct place.
Also, I used the same Kristal klear to make the glasses in the gauges by applying a drop on top of it.

This kit is readily available in the UK, if you're still looking for one. Cheap too! If I remember, Hamilkar built the 1/72 kit, this is the 1/32.

It's agood thing this is a long term build for I really need to take my time on this one.

I just managed to hunt one down here. Yea he did build 1/72 but the video of the 1/32 was an old video of his you just have to scroll down or just google it

It means a lot too me. This is a tough build for me!
I never did so much research for a build, and I really need to think how to take the build and paint steps..

I'm using the AFV techniques on this build, and it seems to work!
And I love this plane!

Incredible work on the engine Frans, looks great, very realistic.

Can you tell something more about how you made the tarp please?
Do you use wood glue to form it?
Do you form it first, than take it off again to paint it?
I was thinking about using it in the past, but was not sure how.

I have two methods to make these.
The easy way, and the more advanced way... lol
This tarp was made the easy way.
I simply took a piece of paper tissue and cut it in the shape I needed.
Lay it down on a piece of kitchen towel, and simply began to paint it in canvas colour with Vallejo acrylic.
By brushing the colour on carefully without ripping the paper, it starts to wrinkle.
I turned it over and painted the other side.
Let it almost dry over a toothpick. And with the paint still a tiny bit wet, I draped it over the console.
Now I just let the paint fully dry. That's it!

The hard way, and my most used way,
Again a piece of paper tissue, but know I started with putting a piece of cling film over the model where the tarp must be to protect the model.
The piece of paper I place on top of the cling film and I start to put diluted wood glue on top of the paper until it starts to fold naturally over the model. Extra folds can be made by putting a toothpick under the paper and pressing down the paper on the toothpick. Removing the toothpick carefully will create a fold. When the paper dried up, You can remove the paper from the cling foil, and airbrush it in the colour you want.

This last way is the longest, but the better one.

I thought you put the tarp on, drenched in wood glue, and painted it after drying.
I just could not figure out how to do the masking.

Hey Frans, it looks like we're at the same stage..we both have the cockpit and engine assemblies completed. I'm taking a break today and will beging assembling the fuselage tomorrow.

Those PE details bring so much more to the cockpit interior and your scratch-built tarp over the top of the instrument panel is a great touch to hide the gap, which I have on mine that I noticed when I dry-fitted the two halves together. Your engine looks awesome, looks like you used metal paints; I can't because I work at the dining table. Love your scratch-built shower heads to simulate the filters!

I hope we don't encounter any fuselage and wing assembly issues...it's been a great build so far with everything going together well, except for the disorganized assembly instructions.

Indeed we are at the same stage.
However I need to wait on a replacement barrel to arrive before I can close the fuselage.
I thinking of starting the floats soon.

The engine is not painted in metal paints like Alclad.
I used dark steel pigment from AK and brushed it on the aluminium painted engine.
Works for me!

I agree on the great build, I love this model, even when the instructions are confusing...
