Italeri GMC CCKW 1947 1/35

I think this forum, is starting to look like a Zoo, with all those Tigers
and Panthers.
Time for something different.
So, the GMC cckw, aka Deuce and a half.
Workhorse of the U.S. Army during ww2 and far after that.
I think everybody here knows this vehicle, if not here is a link to some more

I allready built one before,

so this time it's going to be a little bit different.
The year is 1947, and after picking themselves up after the war, the Dutch went
back to their normal life, work, eat and sleep. Also my dad got a job again, working as
a truckdriver, delivering frozen foods.

First in Holland and later also to some other countries. For example he
delivered foods to the U.S. troops stationed in Germany.
Because in that time there were almost no trucks in Holland, they were destroyed
or taken by ze zjermans,
the company he worked for, bought some trucks from the
U.S. Army, who (you can imagine...) had enough off them standing around.
Adjusted them a little bit and started working with them.
I'm going to try to replicate the truck on the picture above.
A sort off tribute to my father, who sadly is not with us anymore.

Ok, first up the kit.
It's Italeri's no 247, unfortunatly the one with the hole in the roof
, but I'm going
to sort that out later (hopefully).

It all looks very nice. Not to much flash and lines.
Also the kit is in a very good state, considering I bought it seceond hand.
Small sheet off decals.

Which I won't be using, except for the dashboard.
And a booklet.

And some work I did up to now.
Like the book says, I started with the chassis.

With a little bit off work on the inside.

After cleaning that up, I took some parts and layed them out, the way they would go on
in the kit and put the picture next to it.

Here you can clearly see, the chassis in the picture is much longer. Look at the
distance between the gastank and the first wheel.
So, I did some measuring and took out the saw.

Using the upper beam as a guide, it was a quick job.
Same goes for the back off the frame.

And this is how it's going to be.

Decided on putting in a piece in the back also, so it would be easier to use the parts
going in between the two main beams in the back. Making the back look nice in
one go.
And here they are. Used 2 small strips to commect the pieces, and a wider plate on
the outside ,with a line scribed in it.
Added some straps to, only on the outside, because the inside will
almost be invisible.


And here you have the chassis put together.

Luckily it is straight..
Gastank with some damage / dents, bit hard to see with the dark colour of the
plastic. Forgot the cap, but glued it on later.

Started on the axles which, I remembered from the last time, have some locatorpins
on that are completely wrong.

So cut off the pins, which are only there to prevent the axle from twisting.
Put the whole thing together and only after making sure everything sits oke,
glued them stuck.
Next step, the drive shafts.
Since I put the axles further from the engine, I'll have to extend them as well.

Some Evergreen tubing and a piece of a pin to connect.

The parts close to the gearbox, allready were much thinner, so by drilling out the
tube I could slide them in and out (like in real life), making it easier to put them in
place.

Then the big test. Everyone who has ever build a 6 or more wheel vehicle, knows that one
of the hardest parts is to get all wheels touching the surface.
So, I slapped some wheels together and.....

Woohoo....
, even after all that work on the chassis, only one wheel is something like
maybe half a millimeter from the ground. Easy to fix.
And dead straight.

I'm a happy camper.
Then it was time for (the) bed.
This is were it's supposed to be on the front off the chassis.

Again I decided on cutting it in half, and adding a piece in the middle. This is so I will
have some ribs, which it's laying on, in the back as well.

Measured it up, cut it and glued it in place, using some small strips underneath, to
make a strong connection.

Actually it's another vehicle (plate), but the board looks the same.
Anyway, you can see it's diffferent from the one in the kit. I decided to use this board
instead of fabricating a new one, because it fits to the bed at exactly the right hight.
This way I will be sure that the bed, in cobination with the ribs, sits straight on the
chassis.
First step, change the underside of the board, using some tape and a scriber.


Still a bit rough, but you get the idea.
Then I decided the easiest way was to cut off the piece I needed and build up the rest.

Next step, filling the hole with some tube. Pressed a little bit to hard.

This made me decide to go for option B.....
For this I had to know the hight off the board. On the first picture you can see,
it's about the same hight as the cabin.
So.....

Some measuring, cutting and glueing.....

All in one piece, also better for the strength.

A piece off 1mm plate, scribed and rougly sanded to make it look like wood.

The scribed lines a gave a bit off a v shape, by scribing the lines first and the
holding the scriber at about 45 degrees, going through the lines again, from both
sides off course.
Before doing any other work on the board, I wanted it connected to the bed.
So, I had to finish the bed first.
On the pics the bed looks thicker then the one I had here, so I wanted to make it thicker.
Cut a plate to size.

Scribed the steel beams and the wood in between.

Covered the steel with tape, and sanded in the woodgrain.

Glued it in place, that way also covering the seams,
and glued on the board. Made a rig
to keep it all straight.

Oh, and also added some detail to the board.

As can be seen in this picture.

The turnsignal handles (sorry, I don't know their name..) will be added later, including
the cables.
Because this had to dry, I had some time for another job.



I pre bend the circle, but still needs a lot off filler. Problem is, the roof is round
front to back, but also left to right.
This had to dry also.
So, back to the bed again.
I forgot to take some foto's, but maybe I can describe to you what I did.
On the bed side of the board, I put two pieces of strip, opposite the two standing legs. After
this i put two smal strips on the side, creating a u shaped steel beam, with the wood in it.
Jeez, this is hard to explain.....
After this I glued some strips on the side off the bed, covering the seam. And a slightly
larger strip on the back.
Then, knowing I was going to stop for today, I put some Vallejo filler all around and put it
away, giving it time to harden.

And this is where I am now.
I promise you I will make some more pictures next time, after sanding.
