So egg-cited to get under-way, and already put the sprue's in soapy water to wash to sharing the box shots and sprue pics whilst it dries.....



So this is the Hasegawa SR-71 Blackbird in Eggplane Scale, I'm 46 now and have loved this plane since I was a kid, I had a bunch of airplane books and posters and this was always my favourite. This airplane has quite a history : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_SR-71_Blackbird

Just to add a little interest, apparently this is an actual airframe as well....

Just how many years was this thing ahead of it's time, it looks cooler than most of the stuff in sci fi movies.....

and first evenings work is done.... nothing ruined as yet, phew!!

not done his arm yet... he also didn't want to glue leading me to start a new bottle of Tamiya Ultra thin... - he is beautifully detailed I think....

Engine nacelle no.1 taken from the sprue and dry fitted.....



I am leaving the rear engine part off for now, the kit instructions have it black but the box illustration has it dark aluminium(?) so I am pondering what will look best for now.

Nice start funny that you get a little Russian chap with a blackbird

So major construction day today....

Fuselage and Nacelles completed and glued together before a pause to let them dry properly.



Then got on with assembly



and then basically took everything else off the sprues, sanded test fit, etc. Fixed Mr USSRs arm...

Hi Guys - back with an update finally. I am not sure if this build caused it, it might have because I got a few things wrong, got frustrated, and just plain stopped building for a couple of weeks. But finally got back to it this week, so here is the progress so far.


So after finishing basic assembly, I primed the whole airframe, and used AK True Metal on the wheels and undercarriage.



and then using my trusty bottle of Klear, dipped the canopy and left for 24 hours to dry out.



and then glued the undercarriage, not super happy how these turned out at all (part of the whole repeating same mistakes, getting mad with myself vibbe) but they got done, they need a finishing touch up.



This all happened over the week this week, just for 20-30 mins per night to ease me back in.

Finished up the interior



and masked the canopy, this was pretty fiddly, I hope it comes out ok, right after doing this I went and ordered a new knife and a bunch of blades, so you can imagine I had a few issues which drove me to do that.



Instrument decal....



and then using canopy glue, got it stuck down.



and then a first coat of Tamiya Flat black - I came back later with another coat after I took this, so I could do the underside and tidy up.




and now just off after a few hours drying to get the gloss coat on ready for decals.


Tonight I looked forward to coming upstairs for the first time so I think my mojo is back

So last shot before reveal, all decals are on, matt coat tomorrow then all done, the decals where incredible, so easy to work with, the only thing that went to plan so far, hehe
