Hello everyone.

As I have also been unable to paint much with the current heat wave I decided to have a rummage and found this kit.

Been inspired by the other big cat builds so here what I shall be building next.



And a quick shot of the start I've made.



Looking forward to this as never done desert weathering and will be a good subject to cut my teeth on

Ooooohh very nice , can't wait.

Yet another soul who've found himself plagued with the illness of not being able to paint.

On another note, I believe that I have never seen a desert Tiger...So I can't wait to see your progress

I've built this kit and she's try true and tested for fun.
There's a couple of issues with it, but if you're just going with OOB it goes together great.
The camo is the tricky bit. Desert camo by itself is pretty plain.
I'll enjoy watching this one... I love Tigers.

Right so I nice drop in temperature and my modelling need has risen !!!

Update time!

Got all the wheels so many wheels off the sprue built where needed and bagged up for later.


And the main hull is now together and next will be details time.



As long as the evenings stay cooler will be able to get this built sooner rather than later.

And another update.

Completed the rear parts and engine intake bits.

Easier than it looked.

The detail on this kit is really nice though lots of small parts for me to destroy while painting later on lol.

Great build and some nice detail.

Only thing I would have liked something more on the turret top as looks plain but thats more the design than the kit.

Would recommend this kit if you see it around.

So got some more done on the tiger.

And got some primer down on everything.

Ordering the paint I need tomorrow so will give primer plenty of time to cure.


Been thinking on weathering and going to try masking some spots on the primer that I wil then remove later.
Seems logical to me that being blasted with sand in the desert would wear the paint down quicker than normal.
Also wont be able to do lots of rust etc as that may look off for what I want to achieve.

Thoughts and ideas welcome.

Very nice, sounds like a good idea to show some primer through - I can imagine that the desert sand storms would have been akin to sandblasting.

Update!!

Got the base colour down on all the parts and also trying some airbrushed highlights.
Base coat of Vallejo dark sand then lightened with sand yellow.

Looks quite stark atm but will tie together nicely once the filter is done later on.
Wheels are also done but don't all fit in the picture lol

Final construction done and rubber rims painted.

Just got to finish picking out the details then get a coat of clear down for decals.

Common misconception with DAK vehicles is how they were painted. Until 1942 all German vehicles left the factories in Panzer Grey, by this point of the war they were starting to add some camo to some vehicles I assume. However when the DAK first arrived in Africa, all their vehicles were Panzer Grey. They were then painted in theatre with whatever was to hand, which in most cases was some paint, thinned with petrol and with dirt and sand added to make the scarce supplies of paint go further. Hence this mix wore off the vehicles very easily and revealed the grey underneath. Post 1942 vehicles were base painted Dunkelgelb in the factories, so the Tigers in Africa would have been painted Dunkelgelb, which is a sand enough colour that they wouldn't have painted over it.

This paint would not have worn as much as the thin paint mix on the earlier vehicles.

As you can see here, the vehicle isn't that weathered. The Tigers were only used in Tunisia which was more scrub than pure sandy desert as well.


Just thought that might help you when you come to weather it.

Thanks dude yeah I was thinking more dust and grime than the normal heavy weathering.
And I forgot to mask before painting so it will look pretty pristine on the paint work lol

Right so whilst I'm not distracted by the Mosquito here what has been done today on this.

Details all painted then gloss coat of Klear and decals done


The little tiger decal was on the sheet so decided to add it for a bit more interest on the model.

Nice cat you got there. The yellow tiger is the battalion insignia of Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501. It is one of my favorites tiger insignia. I guess I am a little bit of a Tiger I nut. I have a couple in the stash and one or two restoration projects. Someday I'll get around to them.

So after I sealed the decals with a couple of more coats of clear I did a wash with the AK interactive wash for DAK vehicles and looks a little dark to me.
Let me know what you guys think though once the dust is added I dont think it will look too bad. Still got a couple of spots to tidy up a little bit.

The wheels look terrible in this shot lol!!!

Next I will be using the streaking grime that came in the weathering pack never used this before so an tips or tricks you guys have for my will be greatly received.

The finish line is in sight on this one.

Right so tried the streaking grime didn't like it and wiped it off lol.

Will have to give it another go on a different subject.

So time for a Matt coat and getting it all dusted up.

It looks pretty much bang on Gupp.
I've seen so many different colours used to reflect DAK Tigers that at this point any of 3 could be the right one.
Yours is pretty close to one of those three. So is the Bovington Tiger.
I wouldn't worry too much about it Dude.

Looking fine. Hey, there will always be another Tiger to build. Every model is a learning experience and a journey. Skills improve with each and every build. Well, that's how it seems to be from my experience. The important thing is that your actually trying different mediums. Okay, enough blah, blah, blah . . .

Used AK interactive products for the first time on this one and carn't fault the filter and wash. Will have to practice some more with the streaking grime though.

Nice looking Tiger you have there, my friend! Good job! Well, I'd say you are playing the weathering cards a lot better than I ever did. You got the subtle part down. Maybe a little too subtle. A lot of my early builds were definitely heavy handed.

Yeah Surprisingly hard to get sand pigments to show up well on a tan coloured tank lol.

Wanted a more clean look for this one.

Great looking tiger mate all this armour is turning me to the dark side lol.

I think it looks cracking, as I said before I don't think the Tigers got too "dirty" in Africa as they were mainly in Tunisia which was more rocky/scrubland that plain flat desert like Egypt and Libya was in the earlier war.
