Three,

Decal options.

Not sure which option I'm going for yet, I do like the blue spine, but I've built that version previously, so I'm leaning towards an F.6 version.

I got the flightpath detail set for this as well.

Image

Ten!! A4 sheets of instructions

Image

Three sheets of PE, a ton of white metal parts, and a decal set with four options.

That's it for now, might be adding a few more bits later on :
Looking forward to this soooo much, lol!

The 56 Squadron F3 markings are always my favorite markings for the EE Lightning.

Hi Mate

Looking forward to watching this one come together, this is one of my all time favourite builds. I love that Flightpath detail set, should really bring out the detail. I will be interested to see how the white metal legs work with the kit as I reckon the mounting points for the undercarriage is the weakest point of the kit.

cheers
Rossco

Mine too! I'll be saving those for when Airfix release the F3 later this year, I hope!

Hi guys, :th:

So I've made my decision, I'm going with the F.6 from 11 Sqn. Haven't done a grey/green lighning yet, and I like the look of the dayglo decals!

Here's a few pics of XS901 in her 11 Sqn days.

As you can see, she had a few different tail codes, I'll be doing 'G' as that's what comes with the kit, lol!

Little bit of history,
The English Electric Lightning is a supersonic fighter aircraft of the Cold War era. It was designed, developed, and manufactured by English Electric, which was subsequently absorbed by the newly formed British Aircraft Corporation. It was then marketed as the BAC Lightning. The Lightning was the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft and was the first aircraft capable of supercruise. The Lightning was used by the Royal Air Force(RAF) and the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF). Although it was the RAF's primary interceptor for more than two decades it was never required to attack another aircraft.

The Lightning is powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines in a unique staggered stacked installation in the fuselage. The Lightning was developed to intercept increasingly-capable bomber aircraft (Tupolev Tu-16, Tupolev Tu-22, Tupolev Tu-95), and thus has exceptional rate of climb, ceiling, and speed; pilots have described flying it as "being saddled to a skyrocket". This performance made the Lightning a 'fuel critical' aircraft meaning that its missions are dictated to a high degree by its limited range. Later developments provided greater range and speed along with aerial reconnaissance and ground-attack capability.

Following retirement in the late 1980s, many of the remaining aircraft became museum exhibits and, until 2010, three Lightnings were kept flying at "Thunder City" in Cape Town, South Africa. In September 2008, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers conferred on the Lightning its "Engineering Heritage Award" at a ceremony at BAE Systems' site at Warton Aerodrome.

And a cool vid, don't worry, it's only a short clip!

Hoping to make a start on this tonight, thanks for looking fellas :cheers2: :th:

Hey Chief,

I have been very close to buy this kit a couple of times - sooner or later I will go for the 1/48 scale version as well. It will be interesting to see the quality of the kit. :pop:

Good Luck with your build!

Cheers mate

Hi guys :th:

Time for another update.

Lightning F.6
Single-seat fighter (an improved longer-range variant of the F.3). It featured new wings with better efficiency and subsonic performance, overwing fuel tanks and a larger ventral fuel tank, reintroduction of 30 mm cannon (initially no cannon but later in the forward part of the ventral pack rather than in the nose), use of Red Top missiles. A total of 39 built (also nine converted from F.3 and 15 from F.3A).

Quote from a RAF pilot.
"Suddenly the telephone would ring and it would be one of the radar controllers from around the UK ordering you to scramble immediately. And so you would run to the aeroplane, jump in. They [Soviet aircraft] were just monitoring, listening, recording everything that went on. So you would get up alongside and normally they would wave, quite often there would be a little white face at every window. They knew we were there just to watch them. One I intercepted when he violated the airspace and I was trying to get him to land but it was scary. He just wanted to get out of there, he was out of Dodge as fast as he could go, he didn't want to mix it with me."

RAF Lightning pilot John Ward

Started the build with the seat, kit seat is pretty good. Just added a couple of bits to the frame.

Image

The PE set provides a harness set, but I'll add that once the seat is painted.

Then I started on the cockpit. First, made the tub from PE. Not sure what the reasoning with this is? I can't see any improvement that wouldn't be achieved from just adding panels?!

Image

As its all PE, I thought I'd give the soldering a try. Turns out, it's easier than using ca! I usually end up with the bits stuck to me instead, lol!

Instrument panel formed

Image

Here, most of it is assembled. There are a few more bits to add once it's fitted.

Image

Added a bit of wear and tear, also a dark dirt wash.

Image

Few knobs and switches to pick out later.

Moving onto the intake. A bit of surgery was required to fit the white metal radar cone.

Image

This will act as the nose weight, but I also filled the void behind the cone with lead shot, just to be on the safe side!

Image

Normally, this is the time where I start fretting about intake seams, painting inside the intakes and all that polava! But for this set up I don't need to worry about it

Now I did come across a problem when I started the exhausts. Here are the instructions.

Image

Two pieces of PE, sat inside the tailpipe. Here's the two pieces.

Image

Even to my untrained eye, I can see that these would look crap. Let alone the fact that dry fitting shows them to be too big!

So, I got the kit parts that should be replaced, removed the surface detail, and added the now chopped up PE parts!

Image

I'll give them a coat of primer to see how they're going to look. I may get some resin ones, or steal a kit set from the stash.

Just to give myself a feeling of progress, I fitted the cockpit and intake, and got the fuselage halves together. (Jet nozzles can be added later!)

Image

That's it for now, hope you're enjoying your builds! Thanks for looking :cheers2:  :th:

Hi fellas :th:
Final update on this. It got set aside for a long time as I lost my rag with the PE set, more on that later!

I thought this GB ended last month so again, left this on the shelf. Then last week I realised it finished end of this month, so it's been a mad rush to get finished!

To that end, there aren't a great deal of pics, but at least it's done

Anyway, added PE wheel wells.

Image

Then got the wings on and started on removing any filler/seams.

Image
Image

This is when I lost interest. After spending a lot of time soldering the PE cockpit, I had a real struggle getting it to fit, it's way too big. Then I came across this... PE canopy frame next to the kit piece, look at the size difference!!

Image

Now the Flightpath upgrade set I got was originally designed for their own vacform kit, which was never released as Airfix brought theirs out first. So I'm assuming this is why there's such a difference in scale. However, why the hell are they selling this for the Airfix kit, if it's too bloody big?! :pistols: :pistols: :wall:

So that's all the canopy PE out the window, along with half the cockpit that I had to remove to get it to fit!

I then assembled one of the white metal/PE missiles, pita and still no improvement over the kit part, so they went in the bin too!

If I recall, that's where I left it, just having a little dabble now and then.
Here she's got paint and decals on.

Image

And a shot of the gear doors, about 12 pieces of PE on each one, lol!

Image

And that's where I stopped taking pics so I could focus on finishing in time. So I'll post the result in the reveal section.

Thanks for stopping by :thumb2:
