Belly tank land speed racer

Post by JonMW »

So this will be a bit of a long term project, the plan is to build a land speed racing car made from a belly tank from a P-38 Lightning. There are a couple of resin kits available, but I plan to scratch build most or use parts from my spare part bin.. So this will be a pretty slow build and will take the time it takes.

I'm going for something close to this, might add some paint and numbers, but overall close to this with a flathead ford.

I stared with making a CAD model of half of a tank from a P-38, this was then 3D printed.

This was then used to make a vacuum formed body. The parts still need a bit of clean up and a flange for the middle.

Did a quick mock up of the body, some tires, an engine and a rear axle. Everything looks about right and there is space for everything.

Thanks. No I don't have my own 3d printer, but I have been tempted to build one for a wile now. But I have no space for one at the moment, we have talkted about getting one at work and putting in my office which would be reslly nice. I used shapeways for the printing, they have really good service with a lot of differnt materials to choose from so that's a good alternative if you only need a couple of parts.
