MT ANG F-106 Delta Dart (Revell 1:48)

Hello ALL!!!

I get to finally submit my entry into the Homeland GB!! I will be building a 1:48scale Revell F-106 Delta Dart in Montana Air National Guard livery.

The F-106 was the ultimate interceptor built for the USAF by Convair and was solely used for that purpose in the 1960's through the 1980's. The interceptor mission was relegated to the Air National Guard units when the Air Force started to retire the Century Series airframes and replace them with F-4s and ultimately the F-15s and F-16s. The F-106 was a very fast and capable airframe, using all the lessons learned from the F-102 (also built by Convair). It was a notable performer in the William Tell exercises (Montana took home a few trophies)

I am building an airframe from my home state of Montana's own Air National Guard unit, the 186th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.

The kit:

1:48 Revell (Re-release of the Revell-Monogram kit of the '80's) It is raised panel lines, minimal detail, and lots of flash and injector pin marks. That is to be expected of the Revell re-releases, but until Trumpeter released a 1:48 scale kit, it was the only one. Decals are rather poor with lots of silvering. The fit is okay, but will require LOTS and LOTS of filling and sanding.

Quick Update:

The F-106s of the MTANG 186th FIS had a unique cockpit color. It was a type of Blue that was not standard to any other F-106 unit. There are a couple schools of thought how this came about.

Story Number One: Blue is supposedly easier on the eyes, so the Montana ANG decided to test it out on their Interceptor aircraft so the pilots could focus on the instruments easier.

Story Number Two: A Russian MiG-25 Foxbat defected and it had a unique color of blue in the cockpit. The Montana ANG liked that color and decided to paint their aircraft in a similar fashion.

Base color before detailing the cockpit. To get the blue I used a mixture of 50% Flanker Medium Blue and 50% FS35414 Blue Green supplemented by three drops of FS35109 Blue:

Cockpit Update:

I got the ejection seat and cockpit tub all built and painted. Not much detail to the Monogram/Revell kits in this department. Luckily most of the detail or lack there of will actually be hidden. Blessing in disguise really, since I couldn't find ANY aftermarket detail sets for this part of the kit.

Next step will be main fuselage assembly. This will require a bit of TLC with filling and sanding!

Okay gang, here is the latest progress.

I got the upper fuselage halves mated together and the cockpit tub installed.

The tail was a bit tricky and there was a step in the join so I shaved it down with a chisel blade and that got everything flush, but it will still require sanding and filling to get it ready for the primer coat.

Next step will be the delta wing/lower fuselage assembly. This will take a lot of work since the mold design is all one piece and has LOTS of surface area to cover.

Okay gang! Here is a quick update!

I got the wing/lower fuselage assembled. It took a bit of finagling but I got it to look fairly decent. It will require filling and sanding to get rid of a couple of odd steps and gaps, but it will look fine.

I've been working on the landing gear bays and engine/tailcan assembly as well.

That kit really has some nice detaling, but it seems to have a couple challenges as well. The build looks great sofar!

That Foxbat blue interior looks awesome, great story about it too!
