Well... First public build, first group build, first time using resins and my 6th model I spent a lot of time on this forum and now it's time to some practice and hopefully receive some constructive critic

Based on group build rules and limitations of my stash there was simple question: mig-21 or mig-29. So let's start with Mig-21 from Czechoslovakia and we'll see...

Model is Eduard 1/48 MiG-21PFM

I'll try to move fast, but I think, my work will stop me from time to time

So let's start building. I'm really excited to see if I learned something from you guys

First new experience: working with resins is much easier on the pictures than in reality.... Anyway after some hours some painting in cockpit is done, now PE time....

Well... Dry attach of instrument panel uncovers disaster... Slightly different color tones on PE and my interior color on photos... Yesterday I was sure they are the same, but... Any idea how to fix it without destroying everything? Or it's better to keep it as it is and just live with it?

No leave it as it is! There's a lot of excellent work there, don't go chopping it just because it's the wrong colour. It's not that far off anyway and once it's buttoned up no one will notice. Just tell everyone it was a factory one off...

It looks like a very nice kit to build
I would just keep it like that and wouldn't bother to repaint everything
The canopy of the Mig is not so big so you will have a hard time looking for the difference in color
But may i ask wich paints did you use because to me the overall cockpit color looks like mr hobby aqueous ,emerald sorry i don't know the number but i have seen a mix of mr hobby colors
They suggest to mix H25 and H46 i believe they are but the names are sky and emerald and in a 50/50 mix they are almost identical to the color of the Eduard pe set

So I'll leave it as it is. Difference is almost invisible on daylight and maybe I'll fix it little bit with some oils....
I have also versions R, MF, PF and another PFM, all as overtrees with PE so next time I'll try mix as MarkVerploeg suggests. Thanks a lot for this

For this build I used Akan color on dark base. Test looks fine, but I think I over-sprayed base color with Akan so it's lighter than it should be.

I agree completely. It looks worse than it is under the workbench light, but it will hardly be noticable inside the fuselage.

You might consider to put some light weathering on to reduce the contrast a bit, but don't overdo it. Start with the seams between the two parts where the colour difference is most obvious.

Does not the the resin aftermarket set provide a resin instrument panel too? If so you could use that instead of fixing the colour of the PE.
Would look more realistic too.

Myself have dealt with the same issues too. That's why I don't really like pre-painted photoetch.
In my FAF Saab Draken build I just used a brush to paint over the pre-painted PE to get the right
colour. IMO it was easier then I thought.

yes, you're right. I totally forgot it immediately when I saw PE I painted instrument panel cover with correct color and all the stuff, but now I have problem how to remove top PE part from instrument panel without destroying underlying PE witch all the controls backgrounds... Tried to use scalpel, but no success... Please, do you have any idea?

I don't think you can save the pre-painted photoetch istruments, but it would look even better if you would use the decal instruments behind the resin panel to replace the PE. Just forget the PE instruments, and just cut out the underlying PE instrument part and slide the decals on top of it
and then after you painted the resin panel you just glue the PE part with the decal instruments behind the resin part. If the resin part has not got
any holes for the instruments, then just drill them out.

Just as a tip you could use Microscale Kristal Klear or just regular PVA glue for the instruments to get a 'glass effect' and make them look more realistic.

Thanks for tip. I found it, drill it, paint it and now I'm almost crying how bad I am.... I think I have to practice it Now I have to find out way how to remove paint and start from beginning.

No, don't remove anything, the cockpit is looking superb!
If you mean the PE instruments, just slide the decal on top of the PE part where the dials are, the decal instruments will cover the holes.
And make sure to line up that resin panel with the dials and you'll be golden.
It's a simple trick, but hard to explain with words. I know you'll figure it out.

I mean remove paint from resin instrument panel It really looks terrible. I will keep trying to paint instrument panel until I will be happy with it, or I until I lost patient

I also slightly adjust cockpit weathering, I was not happy with it. Hope it's now better. If not, it's easy to go back with it

I wanted to post small update but instead I'm reporting disaster... Resin instrument panel spent last 30 hours in thinner (original idea was to remove ugly paint job) and now I have new experience: it's some kind of chewing gum after all the time in thinner. Well... Looks like I have to leave with small color diff in cockpit

Business trip is over and some work is done on Mig as well. Model is going together nicely. So far no putty. I just sprayed black surfacer to see what I screw up.

Project is over After my nephew visit, MIG turned back to a lot of plastic pieces of different sizes and shapes... But to see young man facial expression when he tried if it can fly is priceless Now I got Mig-29 from GWH, so let's focus on it. Thanks for all you comments!

Hopefully your nephew will keep up his curiosity about flying stuff and put it to use when he is older... A future pilot maybe
