Global Scale Modeller

This is the the kit, unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the sprues but there are only two
I started by assembling the interior as well as the engine and guns

The inside is much more different to a ww2 plane so it was a change for me, I should also say this is my first proper time using photo etch so the tiny switches were a pain

The engine was very detailed not forgetting the big exhaust that is attached last, I was slightly disappointed that there were no pe enhancements, but that didn't matter

The cooling jackets on the guns were exceptional and much easier to fold than I initially thought, that was an added bonus, the detail was boosted significantly, this kit looks to be a fun build along with my other ww1 planes that will follow

good job so far, how did you fold/bend the cooling jackets?

I started the cockpit today and decided to try out the old school wood grain effect using oils

I began with vma german brown

After several coats and being allowed to dry thoroughly I covered the entire surface in a reasonably thick coat of burnt umber oil paint

Then using a cotton bud, I removed the paint keeping it in the direction of the grain and remembering to keep some of it on

A quick update, the oils finally dried so I got the cockpit together

Looking good so far. When you come to putting the top wing on can you let me/us know how you did it as this is my main stumbling block with biplanes.

Sorry for leaving it a while, I was preparing my models for euromillitaire. I build the rest of the model, with considerable filler of the fuselage. The rest of the build progressed quickly and hassle free, that is until I came to my solution to rigging, 38 individualy made rings to take the rigging.

Time for paint, I'm doing the one with the big L on it

The first layers are completed, I have no idea how this would disrupt visibility, especially as it will have a giant white square on it, but I still like it

The underside was rlm 65 but it was too dark for ww1 colour, so I added some stark white highlights which I thought looked good, but a little too stark so I later softened it up

I masked off the areas so I could paint the "coffin" because it needed to be a sandy colour for the wood grain

to create a realistic woodgrain, I started by applying sand colours that was shaded and highlighted, burnt umber oil paint was then covered over the entire model. this was removed using a large fan brush and the individual grains were painted with a fine brush and then the direction of the grain was made vertical on specific panels top add variation

So do you mask off the holes where those wing supports (trusses?) fit into?
