Tamiya 1/35 T-62A

After a post yesterday on a completely unrelated thread, I was encouraged to put up some WIP progress pics of a T-62A that I got as a present from my kids last week, After much deliberation I decided to take the plunge.

A couple of apologies, firstly for the quality (or complete lack of it

) of the photos. I only decided that I would post some pics as I was leaving for work this morning and I didn't have time to get the trusty Nikon set up, so it was iPhone to the rescue. And second apology that there is no box, sprue or build pics, as I got kinda of carried away at the weekend and managed to get the whole thing built. I only intended to have a quick look at what was in the box, which lead to, "! might as well assemble the wheels"..............you know how it goes!!

As I've always said, if I had patience, I would be a doctor!!!

This isn't my very first build, but close to it. After recently catching some of Michael's (Hamilkar Barkas) videos on You Tube, I was blown away, by the level of detail that can be achieved by painting and weathering techniques. Don't get me wrong, I'm very realistic and understand that it will take me many years to even get anywhere near this standard and to be honest I would be happy to even have 10% of the talent that you guys have. That's not going to stop me trying though and I intend to have a bundle of fun in the process!!!!

Don't hold back - I can take it!!

Great so far alex I'm in exactly the same position as you, I'm part way through my second build, I look in awe at some of the guys work on here and can only dream of replicating it but as they say practice makes perfect

I think that's still a plastic model there......

Alex if I am wrong and that has paint on it, then my hat goes off for achieving a very smooth finish. However I believe you said that its only built so far and not painted yes?

Build looks good, and just practice the various techniques for weathering, I myself have been modelling for years and only now am I starting to use more weathering.

As much as I would like to claim that this is a result of my airbrushing skills, alas no! It is just built ready for priming etc - nice one Gav.

Hoping to get this done in the next couple and thanks everyone for the encouraging comments.

All and any advice is always welcome as I consider myself very much at the newbie beginner stage.

Hmm weathering is a personal thing i prefer to add everything afterwards as i have greater control, so i get a perfect spray job and then ruin it lol.

Personally i would prime in black primer, spray your base coat then use modulation a darker mix of the base coat around the bottom areas and lighter around highlight areas.

Spray the primer in very light coats as its very easy to get runs with vallejo primer, just spray lightly one bit then come back a few mins later working your way around the tank.

Thanks for the advice Paul,that sounds like a good plan (my ambition tends to exceed my ability!). I've used Vallejo primers on one other model and did go a bit heavy with one coat. Luckily it didn't pool or run and I got away with it - just!

It's a great kit, went together nicely without any problems. My only one comment (and its only a minor one), is the shovel that's included is moulded onto the upper hull rather than being a separate part. But I guess once it's painted you shouldn't notice. Well, that's the theory!!

Would love to see pics of your progress.

Very nice Nige, liking that a lot.

I must agree with Coen, I never realised that there was quite so much detail with the planes - you might just have persuaded me to stray away from armour for my next build!

Managed to get a bit more done, but not as much as I'd hoped - isn't that always the way!! The hull and the turret are now primed, but I still haven't managed to sort out my DSLR, so I'm still relying on my iPhone for all photos and hence the ropy quality.

First couple of coats of black Vallejo surface primer........

A quick shot of my, ahem, spray booth - to the untrained eye this does look like a kitchen table!!

And my new airbrush, an H&S Evolution - again, big thanks to Paul for some much appreciated advice and guidance.

Final coats of primer and it's ready for the top-coat.

Must try and get the wheels and track primed and ready today and I can start to think about the top-coat. Any advice on what colour to use would be greatly appreciated as this is my first Russian tank.

As a final note, some may have noticed a couple of sprues with wheels, bogeys etc and a set of tracks that don't appear to match the T-62A and they'd be right. This actually belong to a Sherman M4 that I just happened to be looking at the other night and before I knew it some of it had gotten itself glued together!!! So, I had some primer left in the paint cup, so I decided to quickly get a few bit done rather than waste it. And women recon we can't multi-task!!!

Great bit of progress Alex!

I know almost nothing about modern armour so I've been watching all of the Mod Arm builds lately with great interest.
My experience is with WWII soviet armour so I don't have any suggestions about the colours.
(I love my Evolution too... and it's also all Paul's fault)

Just a quick update, progress isn't quite as quick as I like what with pesky work getting in the way? Got the wheels etc primed and managed to get the first top-coat put on.

Wheels - before.....

Wheels after........Drum roll!!! (talk about over selling it!)

Body, turret etc.......

And that's about it so far. Looking forward to getting to the weathering stage as I haven't done this before, so I'll be looking for LOTS of help and advice. Best way of learning is to get stuck in......and as the captain of the Titanic said to the first-mate, "what's the worst that can happen!"

Managed to get a bit more done to the T-62A over the weekend and as a lot of this is new to me, I really value any advice and comments. Following other peoples advice and threads on this forum has really really helped, so thank you everyone who has posted any pics, vids, advice etc., keep em coming!!

I did a bit of research on the colour, but in the end stuck with the Tamiya instruction of dark green. Not sure if it looks quite right, but for me it's more about getting the techniques right and practicing my airbrush/paintbrush skills.

First couple of thin coats of dark green.

Then a couple more coats, lightening it slightly for the final coat on the raised areas - probably should have gone a bit lighter, or perhaps added more of a yellowy green rather than white. It does show a bit more on the actual model, but not much!!

Just wouldn't be right without a picture of the wheels!

Now the tracks and sprockets, which I have attempted (heavy emphasis on the word attempted!) to make look metallic first before getting them to look rusty etc. I dry-brushed some chrome/silver colour on the surfaces that are raised or come into contact with other metal. Looks a bit too shinny at the moment, but I'm hoping the rusting/weathering will tone this down.

And now assembled - getting quite excited now!!

I have made a couple of models prior to this one, but it has literally been a case of glue it, hand paint to the recommended colours, stick the decals on and voila!! Previously, I haven't even painted the tracks - I know, I know, please feel free to hurl the appropriate abuse at me!

I'm absolutely loving trying to build this one "properly" as I'm never entirely sure how it is going to turn out!!

She's looking pretty good so far Alex.
I don't know enough about modern armour to say anything about the build itself, the only thing that I would have to say that you might want to tweak is the silvering on the tracks and metal wheels.
You may have gone a little crazy with the dry brushing.
It's a cool effect and it's hard to resist it... I know... I've done it.

Usually the only thing on running gear that picks up a shine is the parts that directly touch other moving parts or they touch the ground.
If it were me I'd drybrush the inside of those steel wheels with your base coat to tone down the shiny look. Leave it on the outside rims though... that touches the tracks and will get shined up.
That's all I would do, probably take ten minutes to do it.
I hope that was what you were looking for.
Everything else looks perfect paint job wise.

That's exactly the advice that I'm looking for and you're spot-one with "getting carried away with the dry-brushing"!! Definitely looks like shinny metal, but I guess that's not really the look that I want. Defo going to take your advice on the toning down - just ran out of time at the weekend. Now who do I speak to about getting some hours added to the weekend!!

Yeah, as I mentioned to Coen, definitely got carried away with the drybrushing. Was quite pleased with the initial effect, but kinda went to town with it!!

It's been a while since I did anything with this one. I was at a bit of a loss as how to weather it, so I put it to one side to tackle it "later" . Now, a few months and a few hundred posts on ISM later, I have a better idea of how to weather this thing. However, having an idea and being able to execute it are two completely different things! Ideally I wanted a grimy dirty look, so figured oil paints were the way to go. I haven't touched oils for over 20 years and back then it was only on canvas.

On the whole I'm kinda pleased with how it has turned out. There are a few things that I would do differently for my next build, but with experience comes knowledge. There's also a few things that it pull change with the actual build - the seams in those oil barrels are horrendous!! But on a positive note, this shows that I am progressing, albeit fairly slowly.

That really only leaves the running gear to sort out now and I'm back to scratching my head. Any help, ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
