Strange posts/users

Post by chief5437 »

This is mainly for Lee, Paul or one of the mods if applicable.

I've been using the 'unread posts' button and I'm seeing a lot of new members with strange names (random letters and numbers) they usually only have one post which turns out to be a load of trash with a load of links at the bottom of the post.

Don't know if its anything to worry about, just thought I'd bring it to your attention.

:cheers2:

This is the spammers showing up. They are the scourge of all internet forums. They use scripts to create accounts and flood forums like this with garbage posts that normally contain links to their dodgy web sites.

I've been getting strange links in the forum emails too. I've already told Paul about it.
The link in the emails that normally take you to this post or that post had been replaced with a fake one.

is there a way that you can vet them during the registration stage - like ask them their favourite scale or brand?

Or could you have one of those number and letter combination codes that people have to type into a box.

We already have that in place. The spammers are bots not humans and the coding is very efficient these days!

The only way to really combat it is to approve every member, which I don't want to do as it would seem too officious to new comers...
