Heller 1/72 Junkers Ju 52 'Tante Ju'

Please find below my recent efforts with Heller's 1/72 Junker Ju 52 'Tante Ju'. I've attempted a kit that was moulded in 1979 and based it on a scheme that may have seen service on the Eastern Front around 1942/43. Yes the 'Where Eagles Dare' scheme ran around my head so I decided to give in and lightly adopted some of the scheme as seen by that JU52 in the movie.

Embarrassingly its been 2 years since I posted my maiden effort of an 1/72 Arado 555 and I've been hiding away like a squirrel collecting all the modelling bits n pieces that one needs nowadays.

I've enloyed the collecting bit, the research bit, the elusive quest for good priced kits and thoroughly enjoyed watching ISM forum members post their work, work's in progress and especially the guys that take the time to explain how they went about their model. So it was now time to put paint to model so too speak

When I did this Ju 52 it was the first time I airbrushed with a sense of purpose using my Iwata Neo. Naturally there are some learnings to be had from this but overall I'm happy with the outcome and I used Mr Hobby paints for the off white, blue and yellow. The stripey bits was from Humbrol satin 167 Grey.

I also used Ultimate Wash products Dark and Light dirt for the first time and was really pleased with the outcome, although I may have been a bit heavy handed but it is a first time.



Decals were AIMS Ju 52 1/72 supplied by Fantasy Printshop. Also my decal application was assisted by Microsol & Microset, again never used them before but the great vid by Paul on ISM vol 12 saw to that decision. Thank crunchie for these vid's!

Matt varnish was Windsor & Newton Galleria which was applied using airbrush and took a good 3/4 coats before I felt it looked reasonable.

I'm disappointed with the canopy so I need to work on my masking canopy skills. Surprised the windows stayed in even when I unmasked them.

As for the kit itself, surprisingly joined up well even although there are no locating pins to speak off. Even more surprised was I didn't need a lot of putty / filler on the joins. Although I used Vallejo's Plastic Putty (White) for any gaps or filling work small as it was.

I would also like to pass my thanks to a lot of the forum members for all their tips and hints on using different products. A lot of my spending on paints, accessories and other modelling requirements have been based on what you use. So thank you all once again for posting, videoing, facebooking etc.

Did I enjoy this build? Course I did and I know I can get better with doing more so look forward to my next one and hope it won't take as long in the future (but family, work and all that has a bearing).

I still have a fair bit to go on my modelling journey and look forward to posting in the future.
