Global Scale Modeller

As my last outing on the 109 was the E-1 I thought I would do the E-4 this time. I had to buy the kit to get some more decals for the E-1 anyway so sort of killed two birds with one stone. Anyway, this kit is too well known what with Paul's vid build to flog through the sprue shots and what have you.

I'll be doing this paint scheme but without the bomb as I'm pretty sure they didn't start to
carry these until late Oct '40. This particular one was shot down at the end of Sep '40.

Got the fuselage and cockpit parts built up. Primed with Halford's car primer. Painted with Tamiya, their XF-22 is close enough for RLM 02. Drybrushed with X-11. I think I prefer XF-16 TBH as 11 seems to be a bit bright. Then oiled up with Winsor and Newton lamp black.

Not over run with detail, just a throttle box on this side, picked a couple of levers out with gloss red and yellow.



Bit more going on on this side, O2 regulator and a map box by the look of it.



Trim wheel done in matt red and white. Khaki for the belts and the stick bottom. Photos a bit blurry but the iphone struggles with close ups sometimes. Oil's still a bit damp so it looks glossy.

Looks great so far Dave! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. On a side note, thank you for posting the color call out sheet. I'm getting a 109 for Christmas and have had a hard time identifying which color of yellow was used on the cowling and other areas. Just wanted to have the paints on hand before the build.

Glad to help! This kit really needs no glue to put the fuselage halfs together the fit is so tight, it just clicks together. Lovely bit of work by Airfix.

Dabbed a bit of floor polish on the dials to make them pop a bit.



Rob, what I always do before I start is look at the paint call out on the kit and match it to what I have, saves having to keep going back and forth trying to figure out what a paint is on the instructions. So for this kit this is what I wrote down.

Yellow bits painted in yellow.



Primed and masked, ready for painting. The wing cannon inserts don't fit all that well, bit of filling and sanding required there. A bit of seam sanding and rescribing done but other than that nothing out of the ordinary. The other thing I remember about this kit is that the exhausts are a very tight fit, they will be sanded before I paint and fit them after the cam goes on.



And after a good thrashing with RLM65 on the bottom.

Bit of a disaster today, tried some new masking tape, nice and wide...



Sprayed the wingtips yellow and got bleed through...stick with Tamiya David...



The mess on the right wing is the result of me trying to clean it up. So, back to the masking, back to the spray booth . I love this hobby.

Sorted. I'm sorry I was ever unfaithful Tamiya darling.

Thanks Will, a year ago I would have been tempted to file it under bin but I've got a little more 'damned if this isn't going down without a fight' as I've got further into the hobby. It's only going on the grandson's ceiling this one as he likes the look of the yellow nose, so I'm not going mad on it as it's lifespan will probably be shorter than a real BofB Me109...

Well she's done. Just a quick pre wrap up for Xmas build for the grandson. No issues with the kit at all. I think this is the first wheels up kit I've built since I was a nipper!
