British 25 PDR Field Gun (Tamiya) That 70s GB

"That 70's" GB Entry: British 25 PDR Field Gun

The Ordnance QF 25-pounder, or more simply 25-pounder or 25-pdr, was the major British field gun and howitzer during World War II. It was introduced into service just before the war started, combining high-angle and direct-fire, relatively high rates of fire, and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It remained the British Army's primary artillery field piece well into the 1960s, with smaller numbers serving in training units until the 1980s

Image

The design was the result of extended studies looking to replace the 18-pounder (3.3 inches (84 mm) bore) field gun and the 4.5-inch howitzer (114.3 mm bore), which had been the main field artillery equipments during the First World War. The basic idea was to build one weapon with the high velocity of the 18-pounder and the variable propelling charges of the howitzer, firing a shell about half way between the two in size, around 3.5–4.0 inches (89–102 mm) of about 30 pounds (14 kg).

Image

The 25-pounder fired "separate"or two-part ammunition—the projectile and the propelling charge in its (usually brass) cartridge case with its integral primer were loaded separately. Typically for a quick-firing gun, the cartridge case provided obturation. There were two types of cartridge. The "normal" cartridge contained three cloth charge bags (coloured red, white and blue). White or blue bags would be removed from the cartridge to give "charge one" or "charge two", leaving all three bags in the cartridge case gave "charge three". The cartridge case was closed at the top with a leatherboard cup. The second type of cartridge was "super", which provided one charge only. The cup could not be removed from the cartridge case. In 1943, an incremental charge of 5.5 oz (160 g) of cordite ("super-plus") was introduced to raise the muzzle velocity when firing AP shot with charge super; this required a muzzle brake to be fitted. Adoption of "upper-register" (high-angle) fire needed more charges to improve the range overlap. This led to the development of the "intermediate increment" of 4oz cordite, which was introduced in 1944. The bags were striped red and white to indicate that they should only be used with charges one and two. When one bag was used with charge 1 it provided charge 1/2. When one was added to charge 2 it provided charge 2 1/3, and two bags, charge 2 2/3. This allowed a range of seven different charges instead of four.

This is the kit I'm going to use:

GB rules require a Tamiya kit from the 70's which must be build out of the box

British 25 PDR Field Gun. Update 2 "That 70s" GB

Scratch Time...

I primed the gun with two tones

Image

Then, I painted both items with hull red

Image

Several layers of cratches effects were airbrushed

Image

Dark yellow was airbrushed

Image

Upper areas were also airbrushed with sand yellow

Image

Scratching time!

Image

Looking good

Image

Some parts were painted with Revell iron

Image

Tyres were painted with Revell anthracite

Image

I mixed dark yellow and cremeweiss to create 3D scratch effects

Image

I added thin lines near scratched surfaces

Image

I painted different elements

Image

They are going to need some weathering

Image

I started with a track wash thinned layer

Image

Then, I gave a general filter

Image

Followed by a brown pin wash

Image

Rust streaks were thinned with white spirit downstrokes

Image

I smeared this area with dark metal pigments

Image

After applying metal pigments I added several pin washes

Image

Graphite was rubbed on key areas

Image

Image

I wasn't happy with the result and combined more pin washes

Image

Finally, I added Africa dust pigments

Image

I almost forgot it! Nothing works without a little bit of it

Image

Done! Next update: Figures

Phenomenal build mate. Great weathering. Do you paint with acrylics as your washes seem all enamel based?

Thank you mate :) Except the gold enamel used for those rounds all the rest are acrylic paints. Enamels were mainly used for washes. Cheers! :cheers2:

British 25 PDR Field Gun Update 4 & Final Reveal "That 70s" GB

Desert Pasting

Ok, let's find a position for this gun...

Image

First steps..

Image

Looks like a white clay lunar landscape

Image

Nature is the best artist

Image

Rocks were pressed inside the white clay base with white glue

Image

I branded positions on the surface

Image

Then I added small pebbles

Image

Rocks were blended with more white clay

Image

I primed only the white clay surface with a brush

Image

Then I used this mix to create this earthy tones. Rocks were untouched!!

Image

Time to add desert sand paste. I mixed it with the previous tones

Image

I added acrylic shadows and used raw desert sand paste on lights

Image

The paste concoction is a bit shiny, so I sprayed matt varnish

Image

The dio is ready for weathering: Here we have a brown filter...

Image

...followed by a brown pin wash

Image

I added sand paste on the dio sides

Image

Looking good :)

Image

We just need some lettering...

Image

A filter...

Image

...some grass...

Image

...and finally, Africa dust. We are done!

What a lovely build :th: :th: :th:

I wanted to build this back then in the 70's I mean as lad, my Grandfather was on these during the war.

He was a regular, his battery were one of the first to go from 18 pdr to 25 pdr think he said beginning of 1938 these were conversions really the test beds for the real 25pdr. Ironically his unit was sent to Burma and later re-equipped with pack howitzers!
