Build #8 Tamiya 14112 1:12 scale Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 ON THE BENCH

Special colour edition - I actually have two of these kits, one unstarted and this one mid way through the build. Got the second kit cheap on ebay so will do one as the artwork shows and the other as the alternate mirror image option of Mica Red and white which is shown on the box artwork as the alternate colour scheme, decals are supplied for both versions.

My favourite build so far but building had to pause due to inclement Scottish weather meaning I couldn't spray outside (no paint booth or airbrush at this time)

Kit retails at around £30.00 (one I got off ebay was only £10.00 )

The kit was hand painted using Tamiya acrylics along with TS26 pure white, TS? mica red with a pearlescent laquer on top, 2nd kit will be built almost in a mirror image.....To be continued

All the sprues laid out along with the TS paints I'm having to use as no airbrush, looks daunting at first but it is a really nice kit

as always I start by detail painting all the wee bits and bobs before assembling into larger sub assemblies

Now on my 8th build I think I have gotten the detail a lot better on this close up of the engine assembly

close up of the frame assembly, love the detailing on the welds

close up of the rear swingarm assembly, chain and sprocket and wheel, the Tamiya Mica red, even though I used an undercoat, seems like a very brittle laquer and chips easy with a nail (found out putting the tyres on) so had to do a couple of wee touch ups

I love this engine finish, one of my best yet, you might also notice the outer chain links are gold

time to attach the engine to the frame, the engine is a stressed member on the real bike

and now to attach the rear swingarm assembly to the frame also

some detail painting on the bolts on the engine

and the rear brake flexi hose was added

some more detail painting of bolts on the engine and frame

mock up fitting of the tank and rear cowl along with the seat



before grinding to a halt as the weather was to bad outside to let me paint the body panels

Nice work mate on all your builds.

I also dont have an airbrush, so would like to know if you wet sand any of your paint jobs for a smooth finish or just brush paint very carefully or both or not at all? Im asking only about the parts you brush paint not the spray painted ones.

for all top coats i use cans apart from the motocrosser I did which i did all by hand, for my normal brushing I paint straight from the tamiya pot with no extra thining with as large a soft brush i can get into the area with and thin thin coats, if you use to small a brush the paint around where you have already painted starts to dry as your covering the area slowly and you get brush marks, so big soft brush, cover area fast but carefully once and leave it to dry, and for the motocrosser I used a large soft brush well loaded up with paint but only applied very thin coats, if i missed an area i left it as these paints dry really fast and start mucking up if you re work them, beofre the final top coat i wet sand with 2000 grit wet and dry paper

A cool build again and some good brush advice
I do a similar big soft brush of clear Future floor acrylic as my gloss coat before decals....it self levels with some care

I've just picked up this model and noticed one small thing that would really make a difference. Drill out the holes in the brakes. I do this with all appropriate models.

In this case though I'm sourcing a super detail set from Scale Motor Sports to really push this model...

Like you though, no airbrush so will use all the TS as I can (pun not intended)
