OK time to ask for some advice, after doing a few wee test videos with my MUVI HD action cam I'm finding it gives great picture quality, doesnt go out of focus and the audio quality is good too. It records in full 1080HD and I don't have the budget for anything else at the moment, I just want to use what I have to try my hand at kit reviews etc.

The issue arises for me when going to the editing suite, I have windows movie maker (supplied with windows) and serif 6 starter edition (the free download), my camera saves the video files in .mov format so serif wont play it at all without converting it to .WMV. the video plays back with fantastic quality when viewing with standard windows movie maker, the issue arises when i make a wee video with titles and music etc and play it back, the file conversion is grainy and not 1080HD. or is that because the editor uses some sort of low res format when reviewing your work?

I want to retain the quality of the 1080hd my camera gives me but instead of just uploading raw footage, I want to play with video editing software with intros and music in parts and a proper outro.

so for someone who has never used video editing software in angst and is used to uploading high quality raw footage to youtubs, what can I use that is free, wont give me rubbish quality and is easy to use?

It sounds like your camera is good, but I can't speak much to Windows Movie Maker. I know Hamilkar uses it on certain things still, and his quality is great. I use Adobe CC (Premiere/After Effects/Media Encoder) on my stuff but that is expensive software with a bit of a learning curve.

after you mentioning adobe I had forgotten my friend had bought a rather expensive Canon DLSR camera and had gave me the free software that came with it, have just installed adobe premiere elements 12 and it has a video maker/editor and my .mov files work with it, off for a play

video is approx 23 minutes long and although I recorded it in 1080HD I uploaded it in 720HD the file size was like 2.5gb, I need to figure out how to reduce that a bit, my camera allows me to set different capture rates etc so I might need to play with that to at least half the file size

I have a Mac and use a program like Handbrake to convert all our videos before we upload them. It knocks a 20gb video down to 350mb whilst still keeping it 720P. I also do all our editing in Final Cut Pro X. Again though, if you don't have a Mac you're screwed, you can't get them for windoze, but Adobe Premier Pro CC is on a par

I think it is because I had my actual camera on 1080p and a high fps as i can adjust both the fps and resolution, it could also be because when i clicked render in the editing suite i didnt explore the further options it had, still learning, still trying to figure out how to have something like the ISM logo floating on the screen throughout the video, I know about opacity just ill have to have aplay with my editor to see how to add overlays

Handbrake for PC is a thing. Adobe Media Encoder does the same thing. Final Cut and Premiere are nearly identical these days. I think most people like myself stick to Adobe because of the seamless transition to After Effects for graphics and such.

I know basic After Effects stuff Lee, I've actually taught it at the College I work at. If you have any questions just ask. There's a setting somewhere in Premiere to set it to Final Cut controls as well. Can't recall where though.

I've used Lightworks https://www.lwks.com/ for some editing.

It is fully functional in the free version (although final render output is limited to 720p). But if you really want to make an 1080p export, it is actually possible to buy a 1-month license for €20 to do that, rather than the €340 unlimited license or €140 for a 1-year license.
