Tamiya 1/35 SU-85 SPG

Post by kozzybear »

Well i have been waiting for this to arrive for almost a month and got super excited when it did! I can't wait to start this build despite the fact im horribly lazy when it comes to build threads but i will try my best to keep this one going and make it in depth. The kit comes with 7 extra figures and Tamiya's "weathering master" for Russian tanks which to me looks like makeup as it comes in that form but we shall see. Like i said earlier i hope to do this as in depth as possible and i will try to document 90% of everything in this build.

Looks like a nice kit, good luck with the build!

Those Tamiya pigment "makeup-boxes" are really useful, they can be used to produce a lot of nice effects - I have the whole range of them.

Actually the SU-85 was the soviet answer to the german Tigers and Panthers. It's a tank destroyer, not a self propelled gun (SPG). A 85mm ani-air gun was added to the chassis of the SU-122, which was an SPG, and was built on the chassis of T-34 :) So basically it is a T-34, where the turret was replaced by a 85 mm gun. :)

Nice kit, great subject! :th:

Thanks for the info i didn't know that, always thought that anything without a turret was a SPG as a turret makes the tank a tank :P Think ill have to read into it, thanks again! :th:

Thanks, the detail is very clear and crisp but lacking in some areas but i might try my hand at some scratch building to add that bit more to it. I've never used them, i hope they are good and will probably have to look up some tutorials on how best to use them.

Thanks and i don't know if it was but it would makes sense, the Stug sure was effective and i think this was too so its more than likely a basic copy.
The Stug had Pz.III and Pz.IV chassis and this is a T34 chassis so it makes sense the more i think about it.

And now to get a bit in depth, below are pictures of the instructions for this kit and they're very clear and simple as is per usual with tamiya kits and from the look of it the build process is really fast, i can knock this out in a few hours! I think some scratch building of extra details might be needed just to make the model pop out more.

A few close ups of the sprues. I used a Macro lens attachment for my phone to obtain these pictures.

The hull of this SU-85 is rather blank, though the detail it does have is rather nice. Im not surprised at the little amount of detail on the hull due to the fact that there will be a lot of stuff that is mounted on it but i will have to wait and see when its built if i will add anything to it.
