Soviet Armoured Aerosan NKL-26 & Aerosan RF-8/GAZ-98

Post by rwsmith14 »

I wanted to build something different. I will be build the the Trumpeter 1/35 NKL-26 and RF-8/GAZ-98 Aerosans. the plan is to display them in a small diorama on a winter frozen lake shoreline. final plans are still up in the air.

I may or may not use the Trumpeter WWII Soviet Assault Red Army w/ winter gear Figures.. (TDB)

Awesome stuff....
I have the very same NKL-26 and very nearly chose that over the BA-3. If my skill set was greater and my scale was larger..(1/35) still out of my safety zone... I'd have built mine with ya..
Instead I'll sit and watch how this thing goes together, learn all the pros and con's the kit has, and slowly dare myself to build bigger!..
Good luck Sir, will be taking tips for the lake dio...
All the best.. :thumb1:

Woah, that's brilliant! I almost bought Dragon's/Kirin's RF-8 Areosan back in 1992. Can't remember why I didn't do it in the end, but I love that vehicle. Till right now I didn't even know there was another, larger one. I know it: I will love the models and the dio, because this is something really special! Good luck, mate! Greetz from Germany! :) Jens

These are odd machines, but I guess they were perfect for rapid movement across snow covered ground.

Looking forward to seeing this come together. Nice work so far.

Not much time to work on my projects this week.

both sleds primed with Stynlerez, then over sprayed with XF-2 white. then I sprayed blotches of Dark green and armour brown. that was then, sprayed over with a light coat of XF-2 again. then sprayed with MIG's washable white.

so that is where they stand. getting ready to work the washable white to show some wear and tear.

It's always good to give new things a go! I never did a winter/snow dio before my East Prussia dio "First Snow, Last Stand" and I was scared devoid of the brown stuff. In the end it turned out so nicely and that's what I wish for you, too, Robert! :th:

Did you see that late entry with an Aerosan? It's the Kirin kit I told you about somewhere at the beginning of this thread. Wouldn't have imagined this kit was still around.
I really love the subject and you made some pretty nice progress there. I can't wait to see you start with your dio. But, thanks God, there's still enough time. No need to hurry!
Take care. :) Jens

Both sleds have been glossed wirth Aqua Gloss.. decals applied and then glossed again.. Weathering done with AK and MIG washes, winter streaking grime and fresh engine oil. I will give it a light dusting of MIG's washable white again then will add the Engine. spare propeller, guns, and acessories to the NKL-26 and build figures for both. I'll add some acesories to the RF-8 as well

More progress on the sleds.. the're just about complete. added a second layer of weathering. and white washed both. The NKL-26 engine is mounted. it still needs the headlight , Fan/Prop Guard and machine gun installed, The RF-8 needs the machine gun and headlight installed. Both sleds will have figures as well as additional figures for the diorama. The pictures reveal some weathering touch ups I want to do.

Had an idea about using a clock with a nice trim as the the dio base. . Initially I was concerned about the prime/paint sticking to the Glass face.. unitl I realized it wasn't glass .. it is Plastic.. DAH !

when the primer dries I will spray brown hues along the shoreline and go to darker blue hues as its farther from the shoreline, creating depth at least attempting to do so..

Andy, I'm Gonig going to use Magic wate (resin). initoially pouring a clear for the first layer (thin) then a second thin layer with a bit of white pigment stirred lightly so it still has a swirl looking effect then pour over the intial layer... It should come out looking like ice with a white tint in areas and clear in other areas then I will be supplemening that with a light dusting of light snow effects over the ice.. We Shall see if it comes out like I expect????????????????????: I hope so Never tried it before...

added some Flex paste as a snow base on the shoreline.. eventually this will be covered by flake snow. Next step is to pour the first layer of water/ice

I love the idea with the round dio base. Makes it probably a little more difficult since there's a front side from all around. On the other hand you need way less space. Great! Err, does the clock still work? Would be epic with the sound of the clockwork. Like a countdown for the downfall of the Reich, hehehe! :)
