Russian KV "Big" Turret. "From Russia with Love" GB

A heavy assault tank with the M-10 152 mm howitzer, the KV-2 was produced at the same time as the KV-1. Due to the size of its heavy turret and gun, the KV-2 was slower and had a much higher profile than the KV-1. Those captured and used by the German Army were known as (Sturm)Panzer kampfwagen KV-II 754(r) and often used for artillery observation due to its height. Few were produced due to its combat ineffectiveness, mainly the decreased speed due to the weight of the new gun and turret. The enlarged turret also offered a much bigger target, resulting in it being easier to hit and destroy than other KV tanks. Due to the increased turret weight due to expanded dimensions and a heavier gun, the turret traverse mechanism could work only on level ground.

KV "Big Onion"

Surfaces needed a little bit of character






It was primed with black primer






Hull red was airbrushed






After a layer of matt varinsh I added scratches effects fluid






Once dry, I airbrushed it with protective green






I scratched it and fixed the result with varnish






Scratches fluid was airbrushed again...






I used 4BO as base colour and gave it some shines with olive drab shine






I scratched it... again!






Looking good!






Chipping fluid... AGAIN!?






Yes! It's a Russian winter! White camo is needed






I chipped it with water and fixed it






I wanted more drama and added additional fake chipping











I enhanced scratches with olive drab shine











I worked with the hull as well






Tracks were painted with Revell iron






Wheel rims were enhanced with iron pigments






Tracks were weathered with tracks wash






Then I gave it a general filter and a pin wash






Happy with the result






I also added subtle rust streaks











...and streaking grime on flat surfaces






Exhausts needed rust






This time I went from light to darker






Black soot was fixed











Some final rusty touches






Metal parts were given some shine too on top of that rust






Track rims were enhanced as well






And that's it. On the next update I'll deal with figures

Seams were sanded carefully





That's a job for Mr Putty






Here he comes to the rescue






More filing and sanding






Mr Surfacer offers some help too






They have received their equipment






Impaling has been unavoidable...






Surfaces have been primed






Cenital grey lights have been added too






Uniforms have been painted with this basic combination






Equipment has been painted






That amo can has been painted in black






I've rubbed some metal pigments on it






Shadows and lights have been added






I've dealt with those weapons too






...and used metal pigments again






Weapons have received some Revell iron lights






Finally, they have received a filter and a pin wash






Done... Next step... The diorama

The Final Act

Styro-Base






Two levels were created






That's white clay, of course!






Real stones were added






A big tree was palnted






Different soils were mixed






Don't forget to prime that base!






Mud attack






Too much mud, I think I'll water it down a bit...






Mud Fest






No launderettes around






Looking good






Wheel mud is given lights






...shadows...






Flat surfaces are washed carefully with dust effects






More shadows are added on those wheels






...and some fresh mud joins the party too






More dirt on those flat surfaces






Fuel leaks are added






Dirt is splashed on the rear






Oil, fuel and engine grime is added too on these lower areas











Different mud effects are splashed, but let each layer dry first!






Russian earth pigments, of course






Iron pigment is dabbed on key friction areas






Kursk soil is used as "lights"






...and dark mud is used as shadows






We sharpen those shadows with fresh mud






Some slimy grime effects are included too on the forest area






Looking good!






Some grass is planted






Don't forget to seal those branches!!!






A great duet
