Trumpeter KV-1 Simplified: Skullfish

This is a 2005 re-issue with updated/new parts. Trumpeter KV-1 model 1942 Simplified Turret. By all accounts this is a fairley accurate model, so i dug it out the stash and thought id give it a whirl. heres a few shots of the box.

the smaller side compartment contains the rubber tracks, turret, wire for tow cables and some clear parts.

Looks like a nice kit, the KV-1 is just a beast!

Build Update:

i took a break from my F-16 build while awaiting parts and made the most of my weekend while the wee one was at grannies to grapple the KV-1.

First up, step 1 was the lower hull. Easy enough with the side walls and rear plate to be assembled and clamped. Boy this things a beast.

Step 2. Deck plates.

Steps 3 & 4. Suspension assembly.

Step 5. Road wheels and sprockets etc.


Step 6. Tracks. Lots of faffing about while i figured out the link and length track assembly technique that worked for me. First side done but no photos of this side getting assembled.


so we can pretend the other side was first.


road wheels and return rollers not glued as yet so i can figure things out.


i used the sprockets and idler wheel to assemble and glue each link into place ( to each other, not glued to the wheel.) I want to assemble the complete track and paint it separate from the vehicle untill im ready for all over weathering. thats the plan anyways. Tamiya extra thin was used on the tracks being carefull not to flood the area and end up joining the wheels to the tracks.


while it was fiddly and annoying at times i powered thro, kicking the carpet monster in the nads a few times getting my links back. Glue curing while i get on with the turret.


Step 7. more details for the hull, turret is complete also.


Steps 8 & 9. Road wheel and track installation. All this is dry fitted.



some money shots, guess i was liking where i had got to.






Step 10 onwards is fenders, cables and last detail pieces.



All done, not bad for a weekends work. This kit just fell together and i really enjoyed my self. Next is strip down for painting.

I swear these trumpeter KV1 are almost all the same - at least this one has a one piece turret. The length and links tracks in these kits look great.
