Tims 300sl gull-wing

For this group build I will be building the newer release Tamiya 300sl gull-wing

In my opinion one of the prettiest Mercedes built. This is the colour I'm thinking of going for

And this colour interior

I have ordered an etch detail set for it

Also I will be using my pop secret Santa present which is the garage and tool dio

I will be ordering some decals and paints from hiroboy. There premixed zero paint and there 2 part lacquer
Every thing is on order right now so once it's all arrived I will put up some more photos

The Gull-wing is one of my all time favourite cars.
I made one when I was a kid. Loved it.

Can't wait for you to get started with this

worked on the actual car and driven one, really looking forwards to see how this progresses, wouldn't mind one of those workshop dio's myself for photographing my bikes

After getting the flu all modelling was put on hold
But I'm back in the land of the living and getting this started
So first comes the chassis. Tamiya have mouldered these parts in a type of rubber plastic. It gives a lot more flex than normal plastic which is good as its all the fiddly tubular chassis. There is less chance of breakidge when removeing the parts but strong enough to still make it strong, and it glues together like normal Tamiya plastic another great piece of Tamiya engineering

This was all done in 2 hours of chatting and glueing

Next came giving it a good gloss black coat and getting all the engine parts primed for the different colours they will need to be painted

Tonight on with the engine. I will go and see the convertible we have at work and see if there is much detail that can be added

Thank you all for your comments they are greatly appreciated.
So I have been getting all the little bits painted and stuck on for the engine
A mix of alclad and Tamiya paints where used and the engine dirt came from Ultimate dirk dirt and Earth

More little pieces too add in the bulkhead and top of the engine

Engine is all fixed in as well as drive shaft and the fuel tank.
I have dropped the fire wall in, it's got black primer on it and the first bit of visible finished colour that will seen. The interior is going too be s tan colour with white and blue tartan seats. I do have some real leather I'm going too get skived down and see if it can be used.
Also the first part of the etch set added to the pedals and some parts too the radiator. There is quiet a few bits that won't be used as the kit is very well detailed.

Still lots to do so on wards and up wards

This is looking great Tim, I will be watching the progress of this one as its a beautiful looking car and your of to a great start, this kit looks amazing.
The detail you have put into the engine is very nice.
I think once my skill set has improved this will be a kit to get.

Hi Tim, the mercy is looking great, the engine has come up beautifully.

Just a query; aren't they a 6 cylinder engine yet I can only see 4 extractor pipes coming off the exhaust manifold, with two holes showing. Are they missing?

Yes it is a Straight 6 engine, if you look at the pic the two centre exhaust pipes are bigger. One pipe would have serviced 2 ports. You must also remember that this is not a cross flow head, exhaust and in take was on the same side

Ah yes I see. I was expecting to see cross flow heads and forgot these older cars didn't have them

Heh, I first saw the pics on my phone and it wasn't until I got home that I realized you painted the leather color. Thought you had affixed a strip to the kit the color looked so good!

So on with the interior and the first bit of body colour sprayed
I tried too give the leather colour some texture. I sprayed the colour a little too thick and low pressure. It sorted of worked but not perfect. Going too get the leather thinned and try to get it in and see how it looks

Had my first use of Ultimate white primer, I can now happily paint items white. Always had issues with painting white.

The seats have had the edges painted the tan colour. I have started too apply the seat decals, no photos yet. I applied them last night applied Walters solver set and so far they are not going down at all which does not look promising. I will try and rectify this, if not they will be going leather

With anticipation that the decals don't work I have got the leather skimmed at work

The too piece is the skimmed leather. The edges are a little thicker the most part is as thin as 1 ply of toilet roll. Perfect for the interior

The carpet was a fabric material called Ultra Suede.....my mom was a seamstress and I inherited some stuff after she died
If you go to a fabric store, often can find a scrap bin with small off cuts that are perfect for our work so you don't have to buy large amount..can find fake leather that way as well.

Ok so I started on with the leather
Not 100% happy with the job done so I may try again. I had no contact glue so I used white glue, it worked but not the best

With it placed inside the body the edges are not too hard to see so I may just leave it like this

So the seats. I have given up with the decals £10 wasted but I will not give up on the tartan idea. I'm going too try and have a hunt for dolls house fabric that may be usable for the seat covers, if not they will go leather

The decal cracked and split even when soft or dry, it would not lay down or conform too the seat

Yes, that stuff look good!
The fibers and "nap" I think it is called in carpet lingo will look in scale for you
Your leatherwork looks great, I did use a contact cement for mine
For the tartan, I have seen people scan a pattern into computer and print it onto paper thus making their own decal. Never done that myself.

I have saved the tartan image and I will look at printing it off.

I decided to redo the rear area leather as I got some new glue and some template paper.
It went a lot easier and I think looks better.
I also trimmed the centre tunnel
I also started making templates for the carpet but the material I have is rather thick so I'm working a way too thin it down

On with the carpet.
Too get the tweed type of carpet, I scrapped back the fluff on the material. It was rather time consuming but worth it

Wanted to try the dash in and it means you don't see most the carpet.
Ow well I know it's there

Just wait until you get the seats in and the body over it, you will hardly see any of the interior.....but no matter we know it is there, done well and have photographs to prove it.

Dash is done
I was worrying about airbrushing the body colour on to the dash around the dials. Instead of all the job of masking I brushed it in. I let the paint puddle in the dips and it's worked well
The decals are in place and are settling down over night. A quick gloss to seal it all then got to get the seats done

While the gloss is drying on the dash dials I really had too get on with the seats. Now I really wanted to get the tartan on these seats but I was getting to a point where they needed doing one way or another. So I turned to the leather, and to be honest I'm glad I did because I really like them. It all glued down well, all I have too do is tidy the painted edges and the drivers seat can go in
I stared with the top half

And then the bottom.
This is it dropped in the car. I'm very happy with it

Scott that's a good looking car

Last night finished trimming the other seat and got the dash all put in

I used a product from work for the dial glass which worked really well. It's a ceramic paint protection liquid, it's not cheap but had some left after a job so thought I would give it a try for glass dials and it's worked a treat. It should not shrink or turn yellow so should be perfect

With that done it capfuls all be put together and stuck in

Really happy with this part nearly complete
Next up the body fingers crossed it goes as well as the interior
As this car bug has taken hold (blame Paul every one else does) Iam going to take a big leap and build a 1/20 lotus F1 car from the 70s. This is going to be another big learning curve. The good point and bad point will be lots of wiring and plumbing in to do.

That looks really nice! Makes me want to order one of those kits even if I shouldn't as I don't have space for more kits an I got an expensive engine rebuild for my car coming up.

If you want to do a 70ies Lotus F1 car, both the Ebbro Lotus 72 are really nice kits as are the Hasegawa 79. The Tamiya 79 is a pretty new kit however the engine in the kit is from the 70ies, it' not bad but it's old and it shows in some spots. And the Lotus 78/JPS mkII is from the 70ies with a few new parts like the PE. It's far from a bad kit but not as nice as the new Ebbro or Hasegawa kits.
