Revell 1/24 Jaguar XK SS

Hello all!

As per usual, i am late for something. And thus i am just joining this fine GB



My subject will be Revells 1/24 Jaguar XK SS. I think the moulds on this kit date back to early 90's, but the detail seems pretty nice. There is some flash evident, and it is riddled with ejection pin marks, but time will tell whether they are an problem or not.

The clear parts were packed separately inside the bag which housed the body of the car.




The tires are really well made! i can't find any seam line and the detail is really crisp!

And the tiny decal paper. they seem a bit thick to me, but we'll see how they will settle down.

The plan

I can only work on this kit on the weekends (atleast most of the weekends) as i am currently in the army i don't have too much spare time. But hopefully i get the Jaguar on its wheels before july

i haven't had any real modelling time lately, but fortunately i finally got something done this weekend. So... it is time for...

Update 1

I have done some work on the sub assemblies on the Jag

Rear drivetrain



Engine


Still have to slap some putty on the engine. Everything did not fit too well. Also the exhausts need some removing of the parting line.

Intake manifold

Steering wheel
Now this being an older Jaguar i wanted to make a wooden steering wheel for it. This is my work process for that.

The steering wheel got some AK3012 light flesh on it


Then i drybrushed quite heavily AK3011 on the wheel


Now for the important step... X-26 clear orange



I have used this method earlier on my 1/6 AK 47


This method is in my opinion really easy and quite fast to get it done. You can change the tone of the finished "wood" finish with the base colour and the amount of drybrushing and the color of the drybrushed paint.

But that is all for this update!
Hopefully i can get the next update done in a shorter timeframe

This is a fantastic trick, I almost want to buy something with woodgrain details just so I can try it. Looks great!

Update #2

Odd bits

In my opinion, the heat shield for the exhaust needed drilling out.

As you can barely see in this picture, Revell has done quite nice job on the moulding of the heat shield, but we cannot expect the part coming pre drilled from the box now can we

Here is the now drilled part fitted on the exhaust.
Talking about the exhaust, (smooth segue) it too needed the drill treatment.

And after. i think that is an improvement.


The dashboard detail is really amazing! Revell has gone through the trouble of moulding in the crisp numbers on the meters!

Dry fitting



Everything fits rather well.

Engine

At first i had planned to build the engine without any modification, but after i had shot the black base for the upcoming polished aluminium i had the bright idea of doing spark plug wiring for the engine. The wires are just stretched sprue.


Painting

Ready to gloss!

Finally! I got to painting some parts.


These assemblies were sprayed with Testors metalizer stainless steel. absolutely beautiful paint to spray, no problems at all. Also it is buffable, as i demostrated on the flat part of the firewall.


Exhausts manifolds got a coat of Testors metalizer burnt metal.




These assemblies were painted with Alclad chrome. also the intake manifold has had a coat of Tamiyas x-19 smoke on it.




And these got some Alclad polished aluminium on them.
All metal paints were basecoated with black, then glossed with Alclads aqua gloss and after the gloss got sprayed with metal paint of choice.




Interior was basecoated with black and then painted with Testors leather. I flocked the floor with Zero Designs charcoal flock.


And here is the Jag a few steps closer getting paint on it

But of course i had to mess something up. As i was installing the intake manifold to the engine (i really should have done that earlier) some of the sparkplug wires got ripped away from the engine. But that shouldn't be too big of a problem to fix. Also i have to clean up that paint near the cylinder head cover and the spark plug wires.

But i think that's it for this update. Hopefully i can get painting the car body next weekend.

It is time for an colorful update!

Priming

This was the starting situation. I took the opportunity and primed my Toyota Supra project as well. I cocked up the clearcoating on it the last time, so after a quick sanding it was ready for another round of painting

Aaaand primed. I absolutely love the Zeropaints' grey primer.

This was an interesting reaction. The surface was unusually rough. But it just needed a bit of 3600grit sanding and it was fine. Left side of the bonnet is done in this pic.

Painting and clearing


Painted in their base colors. The supra had one more coat of red mica pearl tinter after this pic, but i didn't take a picture of that.

This wire thing worked out really well in painting the Jag It was the only solution i would come up with as i had to paint the bottom of the car aswell so i couldn't really put it down in any point. But anyway here is the Jag cleared. Just a bit of orange peel, but nothing terrible.

Speaking of terrible... Proper moonsurface level of orangepeel right here.

The body of the Supra is still saveable with sanding. I am not sure why the Supra ended up so bad after the clearcoat but i am sure i can still polish it up

Anyhow. That's it for this update. Thank you all for following my build!

Update #3.5

Hi guys!

This is just an quick update of the re-clearing.



There are still dust particles in the clear, but some polishing should get rid of it. I think the mixture i was using was wrong the last time. Too much thinner. But now it worked much better!

The paint used for the Jag is Zero paints' BRG by the way. And the clear is Zero paints 2K clear. Forgot to say that in the previous update

Hopefully i can bring you some more update related stuffs regarding the Jag sometime soon, but this is it for the time.

That is some very nice work on the jag. Racing green looks a real nice colour on those jag body's.
Will keep an eye on the progress
