paintjob failed badly - best practices to repaint?

After building, painting, coating with gloss and weathering, I'm in doubt.
The vallejo wash went wrong. I suspect the gloss coat... After a tip from Paul I've tried to remove the wash but that didn't work well. I did this very softly but nothing got cleaner.
It's a 1/48 Spitfire so I really want to repaint it.
Just wondering how to proceed:
- Sand the kit and repaint
or
- just clean it a bit and repaint on the gloss coat.
It's just I've put much work and time in this kit as I wanted it look good (to my standards) so it would be silly just to dump it.

I use a pin wash for this very reason. I ruined my very first model plane by applying a covering wash all over the plane. My gloss coat wasn't good so it looked bad. I would try would Paul told you once again but this time put some more "elbow grease" into it. I don't think you have much to lose at this point. If all else fails, you can use cotton balls or paper towels with isopropyl alcohol to completely remove ALL of your work and start again. Wait to see if anybody else responds before trying that though.

try IPA or acetone depending on the wash or finish. I once used brake fluid and dipped the model in quickly and the paint just rolled right off. do this as a last resort because it will melt thin plastic. if anything just repaint.

If i was in your position i would carefully remove all the paint back to plastic and start over, as Joe suggested. It takes time but it will give the best result, rather than trying to modify or repair what you have already. I had to do this twice with my Spitfire as i wasn't happy with it due to silly mistakes.
But eventually i got it how i wanted, it did take perseverance though. Just don't throw it away!

This is what I did : I've repainted the bottom of the plane and use the wash as a sort of preshading. This turned out quite well. The cammo was repainted also with light coats. So plane rescued and is now ready for decals.
Anyway a slush wash won't be tried again unless I can find a decent gloss coat. Hello Ultimate
