Tiger 1 Initial Deep Water set up

Post by RichardT »

Hi,

I am modelling a Tiger 1 Initial.

Does anyone know if the turret machine gun was removed and the hole blocked for deep water crossing.

I don't know how to model the this for a deep water set up as Dragon does not show this in their instructions.

Can anyone help ?

Cheers,
Richard

Hey Richard, I've been looking at a ton of pics, looking for wading tigers. anyway, I've only ran into two pics of tigers buttoned up, and it was a model, the other was a captured tiger under British trials, but I couldn't tell if that gun was plugged for sure, looks more like water is or was running out of the gun port, and it had a snorkel coming out of the commanders hatch. Anyway I'd bet someone in the tiger community has some pictures, I've looked at tiger I info. And tiif. Found what I was looking for, good luck.

I would think they did
the bow mg was also removed and the entire ball was covered so i think it would make sense if they did the same with the coaxial mg
it would be a plug on the inside though as there are no brackets or something to place it on the exterior

The mg port had a dome shaped waterproof cap that was fitted over the opening after the outer portion of the mg mount was removed. This was usually done for deep water fording. A rare thing.
Dragon includes this part in some of their early and initial tiger kits, maybe their later prod kits as well, but I can't remember.

A snorkel was attached to the snorkel port on the rear engine deck as well.
For more shallow fording or wading the dust cover was often used to cover the opening.
There are many photos of fording tigers that have no waterproofing at all though.

These might be helpful...

thanks Mark for the info and many thanks Coen for all the great pics.
I was going to model no 100 in deep wading mode but i noticed 104 also had the dumbo bins so i think i'll go for 104.
Also i will go with Mark's suggestion of an internal plug for the turret MG as i can't see any external fittings and i cannot
believe they would leave it in when submerged.

Kind Regards and thanks,
Richard

The fittings that you'd need to water proof the bow MG port look like these...

The two threaded bolts on either side hold the dome shaped cover on...

These are what the parts should look like...
