Trumpeter 1/48 MIG-3 Early

As I'm a bit fed up with my Sukhoi build and wanted a really simple build that I could just do and not add too many details to I picked up this one. I still plan on trying to finish the Sukhoi for the GB but it will rest for a couple of weeks. This MIG looks like a pretty nice kit that should go together without too many problems. I might add some seat belts, I think I have a spare set for a spitfire that will do, other then that I don't plan to add too many extras.




Not too much plastic in the box, just four sprues.


And not a lot of decals.


I have prepped the cockpit parts for paint, the instructions call for RLM 02 which I don't think is right. I'll probably go for a light blue grey color, it looks more correct from the picture I've been able to find.

The cockpit of this kit is really nice, however the fit of the rest of the kit is not as good. The cockpit was painted in a blue grey color, not sure how accurate it is, should probably have been slightly lighter, but I'm happy with it.



I had one of these Eduard etch sets to spare, so I stole the belts from it to add some more interest to the seat.





Finally I gave the cockpit a dark black blue oil wash/filter to the sides and a couple of mud/earth colorson the floor.







Next I drilled out the ends of the exhaust using a 0.9 mm drill. First I marked the center of the tube using the point of my hobby knife, then drilling a small pilot hole with a 0.4 mm drill.



The fit of some of the parts is really good, like the cockpit and the fuselage halves, then there are other places like the flaps and where bottom of the wings and the fuselage where there is a nice big gap that will need filling.



All assembled and waiting for some filler.

This thing is going together really quick, have managed to get all of the painting and decals done. Started off with some Badger black primer, then I painted a random camo pattern on the top in two different greens and light blue on the bottom. All of them where post shaded using lighter versions of the colors, it's not as noticeable as it is in the pictures. The colors are most likely wrong, but I kind of like the result.





Applied the decals , they went on without any problems.





Applied a second coat of aqua gloss and then sprayed a coat of Ultimate Winter wash on the top side.



And finally used a dry stiff brush too remove some of the winter wash. And now you can hardly see the most likely wrong green colors. Really happy with how this turned out, now I just need to apply a third coat of aqua gloss and start the normal weathering.

Added an other coat of aqua gloss over the winter wash to seal it in before applying the dark dirt wash and a bit of dark brown red oils on a couple of spots. Next up is a flat coat and the final bit of weathering before it's done.

Thanks. It went together pretty well, only real issue was the fit of the flaps to the back edge of the wings. It just needed a bit of filler and sanding so it was not too bad. Other then that it pretty much just fell together.
