Tamiya Nashorn in 1:35 scale

Started on the main hull of the Nashorn, along with the running gear. Being my first build of an open topped vehicle, I'm taking extra care with this one . Also despite the right side fighting compartment plate looking like its been glued in place, its just be dry fitted, won't glue it until i figure out how to paint the inside properly.

I'm building the dragon Nashorn at the moment and another fella just finished that Tamiya one if you want to check the builds out for tips.
I'm at about the same stage that you are with yours at the moment, but I'll be pushing on with mine later today.
Yours will build a lot faster than the dragon kit though.

Cheers Coen, I was checking your Nashorn out earlier, looks awesome . Would have got the dragon kit but I'm a total scrub at building and its the first (of many) open topped vehicles. I finished the gun assembly today and I'm fairly impressed with the detail . I've got plans for it involving ultimate washes and rust

I've built the Tamiya Nashorn twice, the easiest way to deal with the interior is leave the ammo lockers and gun out until all painting is complete.

Yea thats exactly whatI'm gonna do . I'll admit some of the build features of the kit aren't great, but I like to cover that up with weathering

Alright, today saw the construction of the Pak 43, which is my first ever gun assembly, apart from tamiya and dragon tank breeches. It actually built up a little more easily than I had anticipated, although the equilibrators were a bit of a pain. One of the mantlet supports snapped in half, thus they have been excluded from the build . As for the rest of the build, the main hull of the tank just needs a few pieces to be added, like the wooden jack block and the gun travel lock. The ammo bins and side walls will be constructed and left off of the vehicle until the interior is finished (as per ForbesHutton's advice ). I'm also considering getting some modelkasten or friulmodel tracks, as the kit RB tracks are slightly big for the running gear.After construction is completed the progress and posts for it may slow down as I do have a Tamiya Jagdtiger on the bench at the moment which is giving a right headache

Looks great ThatTankNerd, Tamiya is really stepping it up on there models, great job, how was the berral, Was there any clean up? A lot of good looking detail. Also no death by parts, lol.

Tamiya's models are very easy to put together, but this kit in particular does have some issues, mostly minor though. The barrel is one piece, but you still have to sand a fine seam from the moulding process, as well as the muzzle brake which is two piece. There are also quite a few ejector and injector pin marks on the interior, but this isnt something modelling putty can handle. Apart from that the kit is amazing

Thanks ThatTankNerd, I might just get the metal barrel, anyway I like the way they make the muzzle break. Not sure why other company's, can't make them like metal muzzle breaks. I hate how plastic muzzles come out a lot of clean up. Anyway very cool build.

Yer shes all primed and ready for paint, but I'm probably going to put this build on stand by, I've had it with German vehicles for the time being. I've had a few problems with parts and mainly painting on a Jagdtiger that I'm doing at the moment too.

The Nashorn is essential finished, finally. Its been so long since I last posted an update on this model, and now I'm posting the last (possibly) update on it. Well, I suppose its only my first build log

Since you last saw her, she was base coated in Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow, which I like as dunkelgelb. This was done in a light manner to leave some pre-shading from the Ultimate Black Primer (which is such an awesome primer). Camo colours were then applied using XF-64 Red Brown and XF-65 Field Grey. I used to use Tamiya's dark green colour, but XF-64 and dark green look exactly the same to me because I'm colourblind . I watched Adam Mann's awesome video on his Wittmann Tiger I, where he used field grey as a substitute, so I thought I could give it a go. The colour turned out fine after weathering, but it is a bit light, perhaps I'm not spraying it right. XF-9 Hull Red was applied with sponge for the chipping, this is on of a few colours that I like as a red oxide type chip. Tools and details were painted up, however I did miss some, so I'll just go back and paint them later. Alclad Aqua Gloss was used to seal her up, ready for washes and decals. Ultimate Dark Dirt was washed over the model, then removed with many many cotton buds (as per Lord Coen's teachings), accentuating the details. Decals were slid onto the model with water, then set with Microsol. Next, the white wash was applied.



Now, many of us will apply the wash using white paint and hairspray, which has been creatively named the 'hairspray technique'. I have done this and it yields great results. However, I use Ultimate White, a clay based wash, to apply it. This is because I think that the wash can be made to look much more 'field applied'. Basically, Axis or Allied, most whitewashes were applied on the field using brooms, yard brushes and any other tool they could find, no matter how crude. Using a small flat brush, the Ultimate wash can be applied in an extremely similar fashion. Of course, my example is a heavily weathered, so it isn't that noticeable. Also, the white wash in real life is a white paste that is suspended by petroleum. Similar to this, the Ultimate washes are suspended in clay and does behave in a similar way.

Anyway, I'm starting to waffle. The wash was applied, allowed to dry for half an hour and then removed with DRY cotton buds. If I wanted the white wash to have hard-edged damaged, I would have used water-dampened buds, but I wanted the wash to look like it was being washed away by rain water. Removing with dry cotton buds gives this effect, but is a bit difficult to work with. Also, I may have to invest in some finer cotton buds so that I can reach some nooks.

After the white wash, I sealed the model again with a flat coat, Winsor and Newton's Matt Varnish to be exact. This did dull down the white wash a bit, this is probably because I flat coated too soon. This allowed me to perform some other weathering. Oils were used to create rust streaks, pigments were added, such as soot for the exhaust, and mud was added. The mud mix I used involved enamels from AK Interactive and plaster. This was then splattered onto the model by shooting air at a loaded brush. This was very difficult to control, thus the back of the model is covered in too much mud! I am working on making it my goal to improve my mud . Finally, oil and grease from Mig was added to the wheels, where bearings could become loose and leak.
