Mylightweight's Subaru Impreza WRC '98 Monte-Carlo

Post by Mylightweight »

HI Guys,

I've been watching the Group build for a while and decided to take a break from huge diorama build and build something out of the box, quick and easy. I fished out a Tamiya 1/24th Subaru Impreza WRC '98 Monte-Carlo kit, it will be built from the box as a way to de-stress.

I've always been a fan of the Impreza since watching Colin McRae and Derek Ringer chuck it around Clumber Park in 1995 before going on to win the WRC in the same year, it has such a great sound and looks mean as hell!

I started with suspension and minor interior items

Before moving on to the body itself, there were some awful moulding seam lines down each corner that needed to be removed, a few minutes with various Ultimate sanding sticks and they are smoother than smooth, hopefully they'll stay that way after priming :)

Spoiler, bonnet scoop and auxiliary driving light blanks added

That's as far as I am the minute, laters

So my next installment

Body and other bits ready for primer
Image

Image

Image

A bit of remedial work was required on the bumpers to get them up to scratch

Image

Image

My Zero paints "Mica Blue"

Image

Such a beautiful colour

Image

First coat of Mica, a couple more required but happy so far

The only problem I have found is this

Image

I was so busy checking my reference photos about the seams on the edge of the bumper that I totally forgot to check if these holes (circled in black) were on the full size car. It turns out they are not but I have already sprayed my first coat of Mica so am in two minds whether to leave them or fill them and spray over it. Its a tough decision, what do you guys think?

Either way I'm starting painting all the suspension components and what not to build up the chassis.

Things have a bit slow on the modelling front of late, being spending lots of money (to me anyway) on a new 1:1 car
Finally back at the bench

Got all the drive train together and painted and then fixed it ti the chassis

and a bit of the basic interior, still more to do but slow and steady is the name of the game.

Hi Guys,

Its been a long while since I posted anything on this build, its still kind of on track but the mojo is being sapped and I'm not really enjoying it. I will try and push on to get it finished by the end date.

So, interior and stuff was painted as per the instructions mostly, cage and some interior decals

Image

Image

Image

Image

Wheels were painted in Badger Black primer and then Tamiya X-12 through the airbrush

Image

Interior sides on

Image

Image

Image

Test fit of the bodywork

Image

Bodywork has had about 4 or 5 coats of Zero Blue Mica and a gloss coat and the results are in

Image

Image

Its not as flawless as some of you guys manage to get it but I haven't any way of polishing the few dust specks out of it so I will go with what I've got. I'm just about to start the monster decaling session on my next set of rest days when I can sit down and really sort it out.

Wish me luck

So, its time for one last update before the reveal thread.

Last off I left you with the painted body shell, things have moved on some what.

I have invested in some Derwent Waterbrushes for applying the Microset and Microsol. These things just make it so much easier to decal! I don't know who came up with the idea but it was genius. I borrowed the idea from Paul.

Here's the bodyshell on the chassis

Image

Image

Then it was on to the decalling itself, I will admit I was initially frightened to start with as I have never really had to put this many decals on and them be so prominent, with armour and plane you can cover most mistakes with some well placed weathering, but not on a gleaming rally car.

Image

Image

That was the end of session one! there were three more to follow

Damn it the Subaru badge went wonky, which I didn't realise until I have just written this post.

i chose not to put the belt decals on as I am planning on getting some real belts later (When funds allow)

There were a few issues, the roof and door numbers are separate in so much as you get the choice of numbers for two cars so the white backing piece is a different decal to the number, this was fine on the doors but the roof was a different matter. There are two holes cut into the decal where it goes over the radio masts, the holes cut into the decal are two small and there is no way I could think of to make it any bigger without damaging the decal.

So i applied lots of Microsol and the decal has ripped in a couple of places, hey ho, its one of those things.

Also for future reference I DO NOT LIKE TAMIYA CLEAR PAINTS!

They cover badly and leave loads of little air bubbles in the dried paint, hopefully no one will pick up it.

Other than that, I don't really know what to say, its a Tamiya kit after all so it falls together, the Zero paints Mica Blue is gorgeous straight out of the pot. sprays lovely and buffs up really well with a Ultimate buffer stick!

Now head over to the reveal thread here http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtop ... 66&t=18895
