Cheap oil paints on eBay just now

Post by Gav0909 »

I just found this on eBay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360640081104? ... 1497.l2649

Pack of 10 artists oil paints (only small 6ml tubes and not Windsor & Newton) for 99p and free postage!

Has black, burnt umber, white and all the other normal colours so should be perfect for the small amounts ever used by us modellers when making oil washes, doing staining etc.

99p!!!!

Cool, I got mine for 4.85 from the local craft shop, huge tubes though.

Yeah I have a normal sized tube of raw umber but I don't get on with it, for some reason whenever I make a wash with it using white spirit, the paint and solvent end up separating a bit, which doesn't leave a good effect on the model.

Perhaps these ones will work a little differently.

I thin my oil paints with Windsor & Newton Odourless thinner and have never had any problems, white spirit is usually used for cleaning up brushes so may be a bit too aggressive for the paint?

Yeah it might well be. I will have a look around for some more dedicated oil thinner, rather than white spirit. As you say, it might just be that its too harsh and is having a cleaning effect on the oil rather than just a thinning effect.
