My name is Mark
This post initially started out in the introduction section
But now it looks like turning into a build thread


To catch up for any new followers -

Returning to scale modeling after about 40yrs
As a child i didn't have the luxury of paints/ airbrush ect
So all these different paints , washes , filters ect
are all very new to me

Tje kit i decided on as a re-entry is
Revell 1/32 spitfire Mk.iia - 03986

I will be adding some extras as i go along - not a lot ( KISS !)
I will mention as we go what extras i use.

So i have cleared out all the junk in the spare bedroom
Found a couple of benches -
Well it's a start

Great looking work so far, that IP looks very nice.

A bit more setting up done -
Just had to get a bit done on the Spit as well

Needto make a spray booth now
I am using
Mr Hobby Aqueous paint as primary paints
& a mixture of Tamiya MIG for my attemped weathering

Airbrush is Spartax - HH-103
Im still learning press & mix ratios

Happy to jump on board and follow along with you
Good for you for stepping up and posting a work in progress (WIP) right out of the gate
Then we get to learn from you and vice versa
The hobby is way more addictive with the Internet, ISM pals, E Bay and adult income.
No more saving the paper route money for a month before a kit purchase

Any advice / assistance is most welcome & encouraged

One aftermarket option im using is
Eduard - interior detail - # 32818

Not sure how others wrestle with PE parts
My method so far is to cut the tabs with a scalpel
on a piece of flat glass so not to deform it
Fold & super glue as necessary useing tweezers / scalpel
Not sure how far i will go with the PE
After all this is my 1st build .
I guess just "pretty" it up a bit.
(SO SMALL !!!!!)

When i started this build i had never used an airbrush , washes or PE parts before.
I decided to build a closed cockpit/door , to help cover my lack of detailing skills.
Now , sitting back & running a critical eye over the model, I've changed my mind.
Will have a go at the PE door -
If it looks ok i will cut the door out & have an open cockpit

Hi Markinhedland,

The spit seems to be coming along nicely, I can understand the apprehension in taking a micro saw to the fuselage. But I also don't see your logic in getting a cockpit detailing set and than closing it up so most of the hard work will be almost hidden. Now that you have glued the cockpit in place I would like to suggest a middle of the road option which might be easier and safer too.

This option would be door closed, and canopy slid back. If the interior of the door is sub standerd you could try and used the PE part.
I make this suggestion because with the cockpit in place it could be tricky getting the kit door out without damaging your work that has been accomplished so far and also getting the aftermarket bit to fit nicely there most likely be some filing and sanding or even filling required.

This build "WAS" to be a re-introduction to this hobby.
Not turning out that way now !
As i progress , i find i am being drawn into attempting more & more detail -'--- (obsessive ????? mmmmmm)
PE is a huge pain - but you get a huge sence of achievement

I'm not willing to risk butchering the fuse to remove the door -maybe on the next model

To satisfy my PE challenge i ordered a Eduard External detail set -
i need the practice !!!!!
& Resin Wheels
All for learning purposes of course!

You're killing it so far! I think you know best when to step out of your comfort zone, but I agree, the pit looks great

Edit to add: by "killing it" I mean you're doing great work. Sometimes I forget slang isn't universal

Another one seduced by the dark arts of 21st century modelling. There's no way out now my friend. Congrats on a great return and build so far!

She's turning into quite the looker mate. As you already touched on yourself is good to have a good idea of what you want to make before you even buy the model and or aftermarket details. It's very easy to get carried away when getting the aftermarket there is just so much out there. I like to do it sort of a fung shue and think less is more when it comes to aftermarket.

A coat of interior green - pigments & wash will be added once the entire model is assembled

Had a play with some Vallejo "exhaust manifold metal" , Mig rust pigment & vallejo black wash

Pls let me know if it actually does look like "Cast Iron manifolds "
Its hard to be objective

Any flat black will do for the prop. You don't need to be that precise, once you've weathered it, you'll get tonal differences away from the base colour anyway.

Beautiful so far. There is so much inspiration here.

Brilliant job so far mate you made a fantastic job on the cockpit and brave work with the photo etch it took me years to pluck up the courage to attempt it. I built this kit a couple of years ago its a great kit. The prop spinner I painted it matt sky the same as the under side of the plane and the identity band around the rear fuselage.
Good look with the rest it will be a stunner for sure.
