Floyd Presents " It Came From The DEEP!!"

Welcome to my entry into this years Egg Plane build.
This year I have decided to push the boat out, and in a "Go big or go home" effort have decided to throw the kitchen sink at it.

So... I will be building two (2) kits from Fujimi; The Akagi and Yamato. These will be incorporated into a small dio, with a sculpted "Sea Monster", and water effects. I don't have much experience with sculpting and will be my first go at reproducing water too, so wish me luck.

So these are some of the products that i will be using:



Both un-started kits
Water Effects from Vallejo
Still water from Vallejo
Das Modelling clay
Various sizes of armature wire
Ply wood board for the dio base.

Build Update No.1

Welcome to my 1st build update. I'm nowhere near as quick at building as some folks on here, so there's not much to show.

So after giving all the sprues a good wash, I started the assembly of both kits. I began by just building up the major parts, leaving smaller items separate, so that I could get into everything with the paint easily.

I'm not 100% sure if these are supposed to be snap kits, but the fit on it is extremely tight; there is no way of easily test fitting parts and then getting them apart again without risking braking something!

So after basic assembily, I primed what I had using Stynylrez grey primer (sorry lads, got this just before you brought the Ultimate primer out ).





Whilst that lot was drying, I made a start on the dio base.
As I am going to be using water effects on the board, I started by giving the base a good sanding followed by a couple of coats of sanding sealer.



I also began on the body of my sea monster/ octopus. This is made from a fillable plastic egg I purchased from Hobby Craft.


And a very rough idea of what I'm aiming for...


The tentacles of my sea monster are going to be sculpted from clay, so to give them some internal strength I started to make up some armatures for them. This was simply done by taking two lengths of armature wire, bending them in half, and then twisting them together.







These will then be bent to shape and covered with the clay.

Build Update No.3

Hi folks, its me again! Time for another build update. managed to get quite a bit done (for me), so deep breath... here goes....

So following on from last time, I have started to get some colour onto the models. I've been sticking pretty much to the colour call outs on the instructions as I'm not really a floaty thing builder.
Following the call out I first applied a dark grey (apologies I don't have my references as I type this for exact paint colours), which is the primary colour for IJN ships of this period (According to the instructions!!). This was followed by some careful masking and a coat of tan over the deck areas.





Some of the fine detail (windows, chains, ect.) was then painted in before everything was given a coat of Alclad Aqua Gloss prior to washes being applied.
As this is quite a dark model i decided to use Ultimate Dark Dirt. This would lift detail without making the model look dirty if applied carefully.





This was then cleaned up with water and then allowed to dry before giving another coat of Aqua Gloss.

I then began to piece the sub-assemblies together into the final models.



As all this was going on, I have also been busy on Agnes. Every Sea Beast should have a name, so this is what she'll be called!
After previously prepping my dio base, I have given it a coat of black primer before misting over some Mediterranean blue from Vallejo. This was done in such a manner that the blue looks uneven as the sea looks uneven in colour (remember, this is going to be under a layer of water).

I started mocking out what I wanted the body of Agnes to look like using plasticine. I'm not the best at sculpting so I apologise now...



This was then repeated in clay, using various dental tools to add a little texture.
I also wrapped clay around the wire armatures I had previously made, and carved a snake belly like pattern into the undersides of them.



And this is the kind of thing I'm going for in the end.



After seeing a few people on last years build covering parts of their models with wrappers from creme eggs, I thought this was a good idea and had to have a go myself. So this being the Egg Plane build what better time to try...!

Build Update No. 4

Hi everybody, time for another update, and this is the LAST ONE before the big reveal!!
Thanks to everyone for the kind words, can't say where the ideas came from. I've never been "creative" and struggled with anything imaginative whilst in school, but I guess I'm making up for it now! I have to admit though that a lot of my techniques are learnt from other members on here. But anyway I digress...

In answer to your question Lysus, Creme Eggs (plural) were eaten in the name of science! And remember kids... The only difference between Science and screwing around is writing it down!!



So... Anyway...

After leaving Agnes for 24 hours for the clay to dry, it was on with the painting. She was first primed in grey, and then purple, red and yellow over the top. The colours were blended together to try and give a natural transition between each one. Once dry, they were given a coat of aqua gloss and a wash of Ultimate dark dirt.



Decals were applied to the carrier deck, they were nice and thin and conformed to the detail rather well after a splash of micro set and sol. These were then sealed in with aqua gloss before the deck was given a dark dirt wash (If you've not guess yet, I RELY like this stuff).



The last of the parts were painted before final assembly, concluding the build of the kits (with the exception of aircraft).









Agnes was given a splash of paint. The metallic/ candy look of her make-up was achieved by spraying Mr Hobby clear colours over a coat of chrome silver.



Once everything was dry, Agnes' tentacles were mounted into the base, along with both ships. Vallejo water effects were then applied to the base to give waves.
