Hello from Gettysburg, PA United States

Post by Richp1969 »

Hello everyone,

I have been part of the group for a little while. I have been reading some of the stuff here. I love seeing everyone's work on FB. everyone has been great with helping me when I have questions. It is a great group of people.

I have only just gotten back into modeling. Now that my children are all grown and out of the house. So I have more time to spend doing the things I love.

I am really into WWII aircraft. Both of my grandfathers served in WWII. One on was a rear gunner in a Douglas dauntless. The other was an airplane Mechanic who irked on Corsairs, B-25's and a bunch of other planes. So I grew up looking at their pictures and hearing all their stories.

Well now you know all about me. Thank you everyone for all the help and keep those great works of art pictures coming on FB.

Sincerely,

Richard Prendergast

Any way Gettysburg is a great battlefield to visit. I was wondering what you got to see?

I have been here 25 years and still love getting out to walk it.

Sincerely,

Richard

Hey there Richard. Thanks for quoting me, otherwise I wouldn't have known. We only did a little walking as we arrived later in the afternoon on a Friday, from the visitor center, passed Meade's HQ, south on Cemetery Hill, you know that stretch past Meade's statue in the distance with Lee and Pickett bearing down?

The next day we did the 2 hour bus tour, it put the whole battle into perspective and made it more interesting. I now understand the placement of the general's statues on Civil War battlefields. It was much easier to imagine the positions of the troops as the tour guide explained it. I think we stopped as far north as Oak Hill and as south as Round Top with driving and stopping in between. We also saw the Cyclorama which was AMAZING, I wish I had more time or more alone time with it to take it all in!

I'm much more familiar now with Manassas battlefield after visiting Gettysburg, with some of the same belligerents! Ewell and Meade were at both battles among others. I take my kids there for a 3 hour hike somewhat often, starting at Henry Hill, across to Stone House, up Matthew's Hill, over to Unfinished Railroad, thru Deep Cut, down to Chinn Ridge and back to Henry Hill.

Last weekend I found this grave site a little out from Chinn Ridge and found it oddly moving and found myself staring and contemplating a great many things. I know, I'm being weird now... take that Red Coats! If it weren't for my two boys, I would have stayed longer. At least they had enough respect of the small grave site area not to be loud or run. I made sure to remind them of that fact, being 7 and 9 they need such reminders.

What's your favorite part of Gettysburg?

Mincemeat,

I am glad you had a good time. I have been to quite a few civil war battlefields. I have walk Manassas once or twice.
I have been to Antietam quite a few times.
Gettysburg I think is the most well preserved. It's hard to pick a part that is my favorite. I like the new visitors center (I only live 2 miles or so from there.). I guess I have always been partial to General John Fulton Reynolds.
He died on the first day but if not for his quick thinking along with Buford the confederates would have won Gettysburg on the first day. So I would have to go with the first day of battles.

Well I hope you get a chance to come back and enjoy the place some more. I look forward to seeing some more of your builds.

Sincerely,

Richard

I used to live in Gettysburg and me and my then 4-ish y/o boy would spend hours walking the battlefield. (Ye gawds, is he REALLY 25 years old now? Where has the time gone?)

One building we lived in even had bullet holes in the exterior brickwork from the battle.

My Son is 25 as well. Did your son attend school when you were here? He may have gone to school with my son.
Yes there are still building with bullet holes from the civil war. There are also trees with cannon balls embedded in them. It is some pretty cool stuff.

No, we moved down to North Carolina after a few months of living there then Biglerville. Yeah, I used to walk pretty much everywhere around town (the joys of no driver licence due to seizure disorder) and saw a lot of that. My then wife worked at the Farnsworth just before we separated then.
