Hi guys,

Looking for a subject for this GB I found this image in 'Armor of The Pacific War.' by Steven J. Zaloga.



This was the caption of the picture:
"The contemptuous attitude of American tankers towards their Japanese counterparts could hardly be exemplified better than by this curious photo of the crew of an M4A2 Sherman with a Type 94 tankette lashed on the rear deck as war booty, KILLER, a tank of Co.C, 4th Marine Tank Bn. photographed on Namur in February 19441 sports the coat of oak planks which Marine tanks acquired after experience of Japanese hand-emplaced magnetic mines. (US Navy)"

I thought it would be a nice and interesting scene for a little diorama.
As I am an armor builder, even for the Pacific GB I like to build armor, cause boats and planes are not my cooky.

Googling for more images of this scene I only found this picture which gave me a little more detail.



To create this scene I had to buy 2 kits and frankenstein some figures to resemble the guys in foreground.

I bought this kit from Dragon:



I saw that I'm not the only one in this GB.



















Started building:





Saw in the picture that some attachments to the lower hull were not there, so I closed of the holes in the kit to match that configuration.





Great armor texture in this Dragon kit!!



Also in the turret.







Probably to my own inaccuracy I had to fill a gap in the front upper hull.





This kit didn't come with the Normandy landing exhaust extension. So I build one myself. (Yippie, some scratch building after all.)









Some left over PE parts for the grills.



And some more PE and PS construction work.





The wooden side panels in the picture also weren't included in the kit. So made those too, from plywood.



The gun barrel in the picture is protected by a bag or cloth. I made that out of milliput clay.

Tanks aren't my cooky, as you say, but daaaaaaamn... That's some impressive scratch. I'll just have a seat in the corner

That looks nice, specially scratch build brings someting to the tank.

Looking good so far and some great work on the scratch building I will have the same problem with a gap at the front between the upper and lower sections. Thought it was me but maybe its a problem with the kit

It must have been me. Not the kit. Dragon kits are superb in fitting.
Let me no how yours works out!

From the reviews and builds I've seen of this Dragon kit it does seem do be a kit related issue regarding the lower and upper hull fit. Currently there are about ten on the go here on the forum from what I've seen so far and all have the same problem. Either that or all the modeling skill have gone or got burned of the BBQ with the weather we have been having

As for the fitting issue in the front section of the tank
That is a common issue with Dragon Shermans
As far as i know the A2,A3 and A4 all have this problem
Just a little bit of filler can fix it though

Hi Han brilliant as always, head's up if you are using the Tamiya type 97 chi- ha there quite a bit of flash on some bit's and some of the seam lines are big to say the least, the good lady managed to bring it in for me to have a look at,don't think I'll be able to build it but you never known, good luck with your build

Hi I have got a lot of time to kill at the moment so did some build review's on the 97 Jap tank , I known you like accuracy if it's possible so when you come to the Ider Wheels the outer holes in the two half's don't line up when the two half's are put together, cut the location lug off, glue together line up with two cocktail sticks, hope this help's, I'm not sure how distressed you will make it,so it's up to you but I'll be checking

Thanks for the tip. But I'm making a type 94, not 97.
And the kit that I bought is from Finemolds.

Hi guys,

Work on the dio done.

I started of by making some palmtrees.

I cut the leafs from paper.



For branches - to come together in the trunk - I used wire.

Stuck the leafs to the wire with some tape.







I covered the trunk wires with Das Clay.



Painted the completed tree. (Made two, one with a split trunk by grenade impact.)



Started the base of the dio.
Some board.



masked the edge with card board.



put on a layer of Das Clay.



Made a mixture of sand, white glue, bird sand and some water for ground cover.















Drilled holes where the trees should go.
Put some screws through and simply screwed on the trees.









Stuck some twigs in the for shot up small tree trunks.
In the next pict you can see that the grass is gone.
That's cause I did the groundwork again. I didn't like the texture the first time.
I took new ground added no bird sand and put it on thicker.
Left it the ground color it had which looks more natural to me.
Have to do the grass again and probably some oil stains and or wet spots to give it more diversity.

Excellent work on the palm trees . I've been thinking of doing mine a similar way, wasn't quite sure though after seeing yours I will give it a go.

Superb diorama building Hans, love the Sherman too

Hi guys,

I scratch build some boxes and a Japanese type 92 battalion gun.

I looked up some images of old US Army cardboard boxes for the texts that they carried and even found a layout for folding the boxes.
And made this layout for my boxes. I looked up some weathered textures to represent the cardboard.





For the gun I worked of of these reference images.





I made a layout for the wheels and de legs of the gun for 3D printing.



Set up the wheels in Cinema 4D.

These are the handles.



And these are the road wheels.





Printed the wheels in two halves so they would have profile on both sides.





Printed the axle and some handles and the legs of the gun.



Sadly I lost the pictures that I made of the building process , so here is only the finished gun.

A 3d printer is great to have around in scale modelling! And I've got free access too!

It wouldn't make a difference for me though
All i can do with a computer is use the on/off button
I would need to follow some courses before i could design my own stuff
But that gun looks very cool

Wow, what a way to add unavailable subjects to your modelling. The 3-D printed gun looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing the tankette on the Sherman.

Hi guys,

Painted the M4.

First a layer of black primer.



Painted the wood panels.



Then the base color.



Painted the tracks with dark grey and weatherd them with these.



These.



And this.



The result.





After the base color was applied over a layer of hairspray, I did the chipping.
Gave it a dark wash with my new Ultimate Dark Dirt. Did rust with AK rust effects and dirt and dust with Vallejo pigments.















These images above were taken before pigments.
These below, after finishing completely. Including the pigments.





















That's it for the M4.
Next up: The Type 94 Tankette!

Started the build with the wheels.



The hull.

The build completed. Wrecking up included.





Plus tracks.

Cracking work on the Sherman mate, it came out really nice! The weathering is superb.

The wee tankette is cool as well, nice work on achieving the "wrecked" look as well. Brilliant!

Painted the Type 94 Tankette.

First the base coat of green.



Detail painting.



Pigments, metal edges, rust and dust.

And the tankette finished.
