Not sure how useful this is, but I tried it once and was pleased with the result.

In my... if the plastic is the right colour I won't paint it era of modelling (maybe I was just lazy), I built the old Monogram 1/24 Bugatti Type 35B. I did get the paintbrush out for the seats and used some Matt Tan paint. This came out pretty flat of course and was not a particularly good representation of leather. What I did was to rub the dry (obviously) paint with my finger. The oils from the skin made the paint more shiny (and probably threw in a bit of dirt as well!) and the end result was a better likeness to leather.

Not sure how this would work with modern paints, but it may be worth experimenting.
