Montex Masks - hints and tips

Greetings All

I've got some mask for the crosses and unit codes for my 1/32 190. The unit markings have a thin white outline and Montex have provided 2 masks for each marking, one for the white outline and one for the black centre. So my question is how do I do it? White outline first? Take the centres out of the outline masks and paint the whole number white then the black mask? Or paint the black mask first then the white outline afterwards?

I'm erring towards a white full number then the slightly smaller black mask. Any thoughts?

It's usually best to go darker to lighter and outside to inside.

Thanks Wookie. I can see the outside to inside idea but I don't think I can follow the darker to lighter as the white is on the outside of the numbers. I'll go with the outside to inside way and see how I go. Thanks

Thanks for that. Looks like I should have sprayed the white prior to the camo for the codes. The crosses are 1 colour so they should be ok. Should be fun!

Was a lot simpler on the zero, either red or yellow and no multi coloured markings.

Hi, i used them for the first time in my Japanese Rufe in thePTO build ,my hinomarus were outlined white.
I painted first the white and masked then the masks to spray the inside red , in the rnd was ok ,but needed to do some touch ups in some white as the masks in the body fuselage didn't work so well, maybe the modeller ,

I think I screwed the pooch when I didn't spray the white (for the white outlined numbers) and apply the masks before I sprayed the camo colours. Its almost impossible to do if you try if the other way round because the masks are so flimsy and sticky at the same time. Laying them down so accurately that you can spray the black inside the white outline was beyond me. Still, they look pretty awesome as just plain black so I'm not going to cry about it. Thankfully the crosses were the low vis outline type so the wing crosses were just white and those on the fuselage, plain black.

A good lesson learned
