Tired of screwing up aircraft kits, I've decided to join this "Wheelie good" SiG.

I pulled this old kit out of my stash. I've had it for while. The complex race car decals always put me off.

Between work and an autocross event today, I haven't had much time to work on the Camaro. I did get through step three, but not without at least some trouble. The plastic is extremely brittle. Some pieces break off of the sprue by just handling them. The plastic cement isn't working as well as usual either.

The chassis is painted Model Master Light Ghost Gray.

The little chassis bar broke off when I was handling the part. I was able to reattach it.

The steering rack also broke in my hand. I used a strand of copper wire inserted into drilled holes as reinforcement.

Lord only knows why I choose to use Model Master enamels. This is the paint that never cures. Brush painting details will require a lot of touch ups.

I haven't touched enamels since the early 90s. Sometimes I think just for a chuckle I'll try some on a kit...then I come to my senses.

Testors / Model Masters is the prevalent paint here in the States. They do have an acrylic line, but I find that it is not very durable when handling while building. I have been converting to Mr. Color lacquers, but there are only a couple of stores that sell it online. It is much easier to run down to the local shop to get the MM paint. Tamiya paint is available at my LHS, but again, I feel it isn't very durable without a protective clear coat.

I glued up with left side of the chassis. Once the bare chassis is complete, I'll spray on some clear gloss. Then, to help disguise the less-than-stellar detail paint job, I'll apply a dark, oil wash. Once that is dry, I'll spray on a matte varnish.

Pieces in this kit are breaking left and right. There are also ejector marks and mold seams all over the place. It is very frustrating. Why are American kits such crap, while Asian kits simply fall together?

I see Flickr is misbehaving too.
