Global Scale Modeller

Hi All

I thought it was about time for an update on progress with the 109. As far as actual modelling goes there isn't any! As some of you may recall when I introduced myself I haven't modelled anything for many years and so had zero equipment. So for the last few weeks I have been roaming the internet picking up advice, tips, recommendations etc and have started to build stock of equipment and materials. Much time has been spent following Pauls excellent You Tube videos which I have found to be very helpful.

One thing that has definitely change over the years is that last time I built a model it involved going to Woolworths and handing over a few shillings, I don't recall having to get glue and paint brushes from Hong Kong and taking out a loan to buy some paint.....but hey its only money . I have also decided that as its been a while maybe it might be a good idea to practice airbrushing etc on something a little cheaper before starting the main event. As we were looking round a car boot the other day I spotted a 1:48 Monogram 109 which I think will do nicely. As the Monogram kit has about six bits to it and the Trumpeter has quite few more I think I may have gone from one extreme to the other but anyway I'll let you know how it goes.

In the meantime I have taken some photos of both kits and will up load them if someone would like to enlighten me how . I'm sure I read somewhere on the forum how to upload photos via photobucket, but needless to say I can't find the thread again

I have almost reached the end of my paint and materials buying list so should be able to start the Monogram kit shortly and by the look of it it shouldn't take long! As you would expect the detail is not great but it will do to practice on.

Wow, two fuselages. I wonder if you can order the wings and elevators as aftermarket?
This will be a cool build.

Thought it was about time I updated you on the Me 109's. The 1:48 Monogram practice kit is progressing okay, not many photos unfortunately. You know how it is, you think 'I'll take a photo in a minute' and then you are several stages down the road. Well that my excuse anyway!



The fit of the parts is generally good but as you can see I had to use some putty here and there



This is my first attempt at post shading and I think I may have laid the black on a bit heavy, we shall see when I spray the colour coat.



As for the 1:24 Trumpeter I'm afraid I couldn't contain myself any longer and have started building that up as well. I have started with the engine and , so far, it is going together well. The only pain in the bum has been attaching the spark plug wires to the engine block. The plug wires are some sort of rubber so I had to use super glue instead on the Tamiya extra thin. Not really a problem just a bit fiddly and a bit of a pain holding the wire still waiting for the super glue to dry.

At the moment I am spending time looking at G-10 engine photos as I think the colours called out in the kit may be a bit too basic. I have also noticed that there seem to be no standard colour for various engine components. The engine block itself is usually black but the ancillaries differ quite a bit. Bearing in mind that most of the colour photos available are of restored aircraft I suppose this is not so surprising.

Anyway I'll keep you posted.

Wow this is really sweet Colin!
The detail is really well done with all those extra parts.
Warren Blanch on YouTube is building a 1/24 109 I believe and he's got the engine all painted up. That might help you decide on some of the colours.

You are a braver man than me doing a skeleton kit.

the pre-shading looks spot on to me.

Sorry its been so long since my last post, don't know where the time goes!! Anyway here are some update photos of the 109.

Cockpit in progress.


Engine weathering in progress. I am also adding some additional parts like these coolant pipes for example.
I read an article on this very model in one of the model magazines where the builder had scratch built various bits and
pieces, including these pipes, and was very impressed with the end result. So I thought I would give it a go. So far I'm
quite pleased with the result.

One thing though I have been removing the paint where required in order to glue the new parts on.
Is this really necessary or will the super glue work on painted parts? Answers on a postcard please.



Well I guess that's it for now I'll try not to leave it so long before my next progress report.

Hi All

Time for another unbelievably slow progress report!


Some interior detail. I'm planning on adding some weathering and additional wiring and so on at a later date.

Instrument panel in first basic coat of paint.

Ditto pilot seat etc.

Oil coolers added to centre wing section. I have also built up the wings and flaps etc but at the moment I am unable to find the photos! Everything has to be somewhere so when they eventually surface I will post them. Hopefully now Christmas is coming to an end I will be able to speed up a bit. It gets a bit embarrassing when I see the speed of other modeller on here...

Hi All
I have made a bit more progress! Mainly just detailing the engine a bit. Not totally happy with it at the moment as I have had a better idea on the hose connections but this is the state it is in at present.








Also doing some mods to the front bulkhead and RH engine carrier. I believe the parts supplied with the kit are for an earlier aircraft so I decided to update them a bit. I'm not going for super accurate detail here, just something a bit closer to the real thing. The RH carrier that is supplied in the kit is a mirror image of the LH carrier whereas the carriers on the full size aircraft are quite different. At this stage I have added some sheet to the RH carrier so that it can be reshaped as required. I'll let you know how this turns out

Likewise the bulkhead appears to be from an earlier aircraft and needs filling out a bit. I have added some sheet and am in the process of refining the shape as required.




Well that's it for now. By the way for anyone following this topic one of the reasons for the snail like progress is that I am also suffering from a heavy classic car restoration addiction and I'm afraid that the car wins out over the modelling. Sorry about that...........I'll get there in the end..........honest........ Also, as if I haven't got enough to keep me occupied, I have added a 1:24 scale Airfix Focke Wulf 190 to my 'To Do' pile
