Figure stand advice?

I made a steel Figure stand on the lathe at my work for my Vietnam 200mm bust.
I'm planning of let it rust, and twist some home made scale barbed wire around it, with 2 old planks from balsa wood with the name on it.
But this figure is already on a resin mini stand. So my question to you guys is: whats best? Let the bust on the resin stand and put all together on the bigger stand, or take the bust off and place it alone on the new stand...

I think that the new stand is to big to have the bust on it itself but then it dose not look quite right as is if that makes sense. I personally would bevel the top of the steel one to match the curve the resin one so they match it would bring it all together as one but that's just me.

Saw off the resin base then mount a rifle on his back to use as the anchor to the steel one...

But, maybe it's an idea to pin the bust on a piece of Tubbing? Drilling a hole in the metal stand and pin the bust like the the one here?

Yeah that could work I think but might be too wide still if it was a couple of mm to 1/2 cm either side that would work I think.

I personally don´t bother too much about the stand for a bust, usually a small one is included but they provide not enough stand safety so i add my own.
Here are three examples how i solved it:


For my Norman Knight i used a plastic figure base from MiniArt, a section of the Bayeux Tapestry was glued on it aswell as the included bust stand. Not complicated at all and it serves its purpose.


The Roman Legionary had a small stand included aswell, so i glued it on a wood plate and added a map of the Roman empire.


I placed the German WW1 assault trooper on a muddy battlefield with some rusty barbed wire on it.

Of course my bust stands do not look as precious as the ones of the professionals but i think they are quite creative and don´t look too bad. Maybe you can do something similar aswell, you could place some jungle leaves and mud on a wooden plate and then glue the bust with the included figure stand on the self made base. Just a suggestion

especially that last stand is a good idea for my vietnam bust.

Not too sure FD my friend. I don't have any experience with these guys. But I would say that if the base is taller/wider than the bust, it could detract from the main focal point (your hard work)!

I think Hamilkar has hit the sweet spot with his last pic, the actual support doesn't draw your eye away from the bust, yet the base gives an impression of the subjects environment.

What about a bit more turning to thin it down, but leave it wider at the bottom. Then let the bottom part rust, and have rusty barbed wire wrapped around the shiny stem?

Just a quick thought, you should probably ignore it right now! It'll look Brad Pitt! Lol

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you decide on in the end.

The idea of the personalized base is a good one. Some red clay which is typical of Vietnam, and some barbed wire with the wooden sign. I don't know how available this is, but another idea is to mount the bust on a spent cartridge (shell from a bullet). I've seen it done before to great effect!!

Shell idea sounds great, but don't know where to get one
The wooden display with the ground and barbed wire sounds better tho.
I can turn a better steel display, but I think to that it draws away the attention of the figure.
I have to think what to decide now. I'll let you guys know!

Ok, Did a lot of thinking about a stand/base for my Vietnam "the grunt" figure.
I saw and read a lot of great idea's and I desided to make a personalized base like the awesome ones from Hamilkar
The metal one I turned earlyer will be turned down to round 30 top to round 60 bottom. (mm that is)
I will use that stand for future figures.

Now, I did pin my bust on a piece of wood, and I covered the base with some red clay/sand.
Grow some jungle plants on it, and made a scale piece of barbed wire.
There is a piece of tree branch planned, but the ground cover has to dry first.

The name plate wil be made out of 2 or 3 pieces balsa wood, and I will hand paint the name.

Final result of the base for this 200mm nam bust.
Made the sign from balsa wood and dry transfers.
Tried to make a old lid from a ammo crate
The wooden stand needs one more dark wash tho..
