I started with heavy shirt tissue soaked in a white glue/water mix. It proved to fragile and did not adhere well.

Looking around I found a sheet of "Bare Metal Foil" which is normally used for chrome trim on model cars. BMF, as we Americans call it, is self adhesive. It was a bit thin but looked good when compared to period photos. I think pieces of ordinary cooking foil would suffice as well.

I also cut some Tamiya tape into scale strips for the covering over the turret star.

Aha, saw this at luchtime and didn't quite understand but now the penny has dropped . Looking forward to seeing how this is painted as I've not seen any pics of what they looked like at this stage in their lives. A diiferent take as you say and a darn good one too .....wish I'd thought of it first

I have a few photographic references and all show variations on a theme. I have never established with any certainty the color of the material used for the wrapping was. I'm claiming artistic license here so to set the items apart and cionvey the image better.

The "Par-al ketone" spray on sealant was a semigloss waxy black color. Again there are multiple variations in it's application. I'm going to spray the color representing the sealant on the edges of the wrapping.

The final bit after the tracks will be the storage box on the engine deck. Stay tuned!

I based the model on images in the last chapter of my "Son of Sherman" book. Very few references on google could be found.

I based the color on this random find.

I do plan on building some form of display representing a rail car. I might not build the entire car but I do plan on one end of it. The Archer markings are on now. I also added some "chalk" scribbles as seen frequently.

I gathered supplies and will be building a portion of a flatcar as a display base.

A supply of coffee stir sticks, basswood shapes and a few minutes with a razor saw got me here.





Some styrene sheet, 90* angle and sprue were glued together to form this.



Together.





When gluing wood, I laminated some scraps from the stir sticks. Using the mentioned razor saw and a miter box gave me track chocks.

Great work on both the Shermy and the deck.

When laminating what glue did you use for wood on wood?

Pva that dries clear is normally adequate.

I used good old PVA for 90 percent of the construction. I have some phenolic resin wood glue for model airplanes that I used for the deck planks as an added measure of strength. Truth be told the entire build was light and sturdy enough that PVA would have been sufficient.
