Hey Fellas. Its been a while since I've taken part in a build or posted on ISM. Looking forward to getting involved again. I've had this kit in the stash for quite a while. It's floaty thing powered by wind and slave.



I'm a bit rough on what to say about it so i'll just put the pics up for now.



















Please excuse the sprue shots. I'm having some fun and games with Photobucket, its been a while. They are showing correct orientation in the PB preview, but then flipping around when I try to copy them over to ISM.



I'll be more stressed if it does it for updates.

Update 1

So I've done a bit of looking around the interwebs. I wasn't confident on the historical accuracy of the kit or the scale. The kit I've got here (1985 boxing) claims to be 1/250th, I found the kit in a hobby shop the other day boxed as 1/72nd. From what i've found the 250th scale is a reboxing of a kit by the brand Imai, and rather than the generic "Roman Warship" is most likely based on a small single banked ship classed Liburna. The Liburna was intended for scouting and patrol duties. There are other accuracy/scale questions to be raised. Rather than spill them all here and now, I'll make adjustments and justifications as I go.

So, the kit.
Parts are fairly clean, no flash, some seam lines and a few ejector pin marks to take care of. Upper hull parts go together and the lower hull is attached to that. Inside this assembly goes what could be called a lower deck. Before gluing this in place I blacked out the lower hull and the inside facings of other parts in the deck/hull assembly.




A couple of other small assemblies, the tower structure towards the back and the prongy bit from the front.


The Oars remind me of prepping road wheels, about the same amount of clean up and about as much fun.


Instead of painting these i've given them two coats of Vallejo Sepia Game colour Wash. There's subtle wood grain detail that I don't want to lose, the wash also dries like a hard matt varnish and looks good. Its hard to see in these pics, so i'll attempt a better look in the next update.

Update 2

A bit of progress made. As things stand most parts have been painted, the sails to go, and then onto the real challenge of this build. The rigging.

Here are the pics. Rowing/Rowers deck given some wood effects.



The rest of the model is been painted/treated in a similar manner. The plastic the kit is molded in is a sandy colour, it has fine wood grain detail that I didn't want to lose. My airbrushing has been a bit hit and miss of late so instead I opted for washes and dry brushing. Over the bare plastic is a coat of Vallejo Sepia Wash (The same as used on the oars), once that is dry a coat of thinned Burnt Umber Oil Paint was applied over the hull only. Wait a day or two then applied a coat of "Baby Poop" Secret Weapon game wash over all the wood work. Let it dry then a dry brush with Middle Stone paint. Using different mixes of Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna can provide contrasts in colour from section to section on the hull, as well as different washes.





Some airbrushing was done. The red sections were masked off and sprayed with a dark red and then a brighter shade of red for some contrast. The metallic sections were painted with "Brass Balls" by P3 Formula, coated with the Vallejo Sepia wash and then dry brushed with the "Brass Balls" again. The gilded detail was painted on by hairy stick and then "Baby Poop" brushed into the section.





The NOT Forecastle structure was painted dark grey and the dry brushed with lighter greys. "Baby Poop" was randomly applied for staining. The canopy at the rear was painted a dark red and then dry brushed with a brighter red in a cross hatch pattern. The The Masts and other sticky up bits were cast in white plastic, so they were first painted with Tamiya Buff Aerosol, and then treated like the other wood work.



Next update will include the sails and rigging. The sails have some awkward ejector pin marks to work around.
