Paint chipping question

Post by InitialProduction1 »

If the Germans used rlm 23 red why does everyone including me, use Pz grey or black. When chipping the paint. why wouldn't it be the red color, this might be a dumb question, but I got TOLD that the rlm 23 red wouldn't be seen because paint didn't chip that deep, ? I don't know but I stopped using red. but I've always wondered about this, any help to clear this up would be greatly appreciated.

My limited take on chipping. Is that I use a lighter shade than the basecoat for minor scratches then use a brown black for the deeper ones. I think scale wise the red wouldn't register too well and would look Odd.

The reason I use the Vallejo 1 – 71.042 Camo Black Brown is that it is dark but not too dark, so it gives depth to the paint chipping. I should imagine that in reality it is out of scale but it is an effect that does look pleasant.

A good tutorial on chipping is done by Carlos which is excellent :thumb2:

perhaps in reality the paint chip pulls the red oxide layer off as it sticks better to paint than metal. So you end up with the dark chip with bad chipping.

People still use the red primers , but that would depend on the chipping techniques used..
If you add paint to give the illusion of chips you could paint your undercoat can any colour you want..
If you do your chips by a removal you may like to show the different layers of paint before the steel so use the red ..

As far as how deep or what paints would show up with scratches take a brand new shinny 4X4 thru heavy overgrown scrub and through mud holes :) ,, These would be mild conditions compared to what tanks would have seen. the hobnailed boots worn by troops also would have caused varying scratches along with equipment storage.

Another issue whether to use a red primer or not could be, some paint brands used may have been manufactured to give a true appearance with a particular undercoat, I can't state that this is true but more a theory.

OK thanks burnie43, digger303, Nev, WMH, for helping. in my endeavors to find something to help me I found this pic. you can see the red paint clearly where the parts have been removed, arrows pointing. In the Square in red outline, the chipping is very dark but still a light or dark red color can just be seen, the paint could have oxidized I guess, I'm no expert but what do you guys think.? I'm going to try a reddish color dark and light, but I'll wait to see what you guys think.
