1/144 Revell German U-boot TypeVII C/41 Atlantic Version

Post by demarcation »

Hi all

I've never built things that float before, but I've always had a great fascination for the German WW2 subs, so
I thought why not give this Revell kit a try.

Type VIIC/41 was a slightly modified version of the successful VIIC(The one used in the Das Boot movie) and had basically the same engine layout and power. Armament was the same with 5 torpedo tubes (4 at the bow and one at the stern). The biggest difference was that these boats had a stronger pressure hull giving them more depth to evade attack under (operational 120m and crush depth at 250m against VIIC's 100/200). They also had lighter machinery to compensate for the added steel in the hull making them actually slightly lighter than the VIIC. All the type VIIC/41 boats from U-1271 onwards had the mine fittings deleted.

I intend to build U998 which was commanded by Kapitänleutnant Hans Fiedler. U998 only took part in one patrol from June 1 to June 27 1944 and never sunk or damaged any enemy vessels. She was broken up and used for spare parts after being badly damaged by gunfire and depth charges from 2 Norwegian Mosquitos near Bergen, Norway in 1944.

I've actually finished this build but my computer broke down and I haven't been able to post any updates :ooops: . Unfortunately the break down also ment that some of the pictures from the building process got lost. Anyway here's what I've got:

All parts were primed Alclad grey primer. Then I started with the deck parts. The decks on these type of subs were wooden and painted with a black or dark grey protective coat.
I painted them with a brownish base and then drybrushed them with a matte black.

The hull was glued together.

Hull painted in two shades of grey.

Hull drybrushed with a very light grey.

The hull got some post shading and a dark wash.

The gun decks and the sail/conning tower halves painted.

Sail/conning tower almost finished.

And here's the final result:
