I heard good things about this

Never tried it before thou may be someone can chip in . I seen videos of people using it with great results

I easily put Ultimate primer through my HPC Plus and that has a .3 needle.

Or from time to time I use Alclads but they are smelly!

You can easily put Ulitmate Primer through a 0.3 needle, just up the pressure a little to 30psi and if you have any trouble at all just add 10% Ultimate Thinner - Job done

No it works fine through a .3mm needle, i use mine all the time

Primers are only necessary when you intend to put some masking tape or any other kind of sticky masking on top of aluminium parts or photo etched parts. The danger of peeling away the paint work when removing the masking is pretty big.
If you do not intend to use masking tape in those areas you can totally get away with no special primer that bites into the surface at all. Just apply the paint right away on the model or apply some sort of base coat to unify the surface color first (because "sand yellow" will look different on a grey plastic surface and a brass part).
Whenever i have to do some masking on metal parts on my model anyway i found that a layer of glossy varnish on top of these parts will do the job. No peeling at all, it is also not so easy to scrape everything off down to the metal.
I do this all with Revell Aqua acrylic paints.



If everything fails just apply some Mr. Surfacer 1200 on the metal parts before you start painting, because that will certainly work without a doubt.

Always prime, its gives a uniform surface for your base coat and microfilms small imperfections in the surface too. Also if applied correctly paint peel isn't a problem.

What is so bad about the Vallejo primer? I hear people constantly complaining about it and i am curious why this is the case? Never tried the stuff myself and have no intention, just curious.

All there is to know about primers, oh, and why Vallejo primer is so crap! By Will Pattison:

I use a H&S .2 mm needle to spray Ultimate. I have no problems other than needle tip drying.

Vallejo original primer was originally excellent sadly they changed the formula and it started to behave strangely, peeling badly and spraying weird.

With my limited use of using Vallejo primer I found that it went on thick and I was getting worried but it seemed to settle quite well with a nice finish. But it it kept clogging the airbrush every minute or so, leading to intermittent air pressure drops, and a bit of splattering, still, not a great problem. At the end I cleaned my airbrush well, as I always do at the end of a session. When I went to use the airbrush a day or so later it wouldn't work, there was a lack of air flow and some bubbling in the cup, the first time I had ever had these problems. I took it all apart, soaked the parts in meths for a couple of hours, gave them all a good scrub and thankfully it was back to working order.

I later noticed that on an ice cream tub, I had test painted with the primer and had just been sitting there with some parts in, there was a big scratch. At the end of the scratch there was a little bit of dried paint that was lifted. I pulled on this part and slowly a huge chunk of the paint just peeled off, very easily with hardly any force.

I've now put a base coat over the primer on my model, hopefully this will stop the same happening on that.

It forms more like a skin instead of bonding. So hard to sand and if you nick it or pull up a corner the whole lot lifts. Not on my shopping list ever. I actually gave away what I had, too much hassle to bother with it.

Despite all of my research it seem I dropped the ball and order Vallejo primer for my first model in a while - is it so bad that you gentleman would recommend replacing it, or for first build in a while would it be okay? I'm using an H&S Ultra Airbrush to apply it

I have two bottles of Vallejo primer both grey however one sprays fine with no problems at all and the other will be hitting the bin. Last used the AK stuff and that peeled. I do have Stynelrez (Ultimate) but haven't tried it yet. The best one I have used to be honest has been the Halfords rattle can. Goes on and leaves a very nice finish. I have never had it peel either but obviously it can be very messy. It is also available in a tin so you can make it up to go through your AB though I haven't tried that either.

I picked up some Badger Stynalrez at a model show 2 years ago, best thing I ever did flawless finish every time, every model. No matter if I spray in the summer, winter you name it I just use Ultimate branded stynalrez now as my go to primer.

Put it this way, I've used a small amount out of a 200ml bottle and the rest is going in the bin. I trust the regular posters on here and have ordered a bottle of Ultimate.

Its a shame as at one point vallejo was great stuff, but they changed it along the way and its now crap

You could help in a way for sure: In order to spread the glad tidings of Ultimate Stynelrez i´d like to have a bottle of that in order to trial it and to make the sun shine again in my realm. Since we are best friends now it would be greatly appreciated and sure literally everyone would benefit from that i can imagine.
While you prepare the parcel i will now start to look further into detail to see how it is used correctly and what to keep in mind. There is certainly a thread on this board you can direct me to where i can find this info all prepared for the novices? I am already very much looking forward to see the benefits.

Vallejo is fine, as long as you don't want to mask it or sand it, dries quickly but takes a while to cure, i have a large bottle of it and use it on tanks as the problems don't surface.
