Trumpeter 1:25 1964 Ford Falcon Futura

I thought I may as well start a work in progress for my Trumpeter 1:25 1964 Ford Falcon Futura build. However I must admit that I started this build way back in November 2015 (whilst off work recovering from knee surgery ), and has been somewhat stalled for the past few months due to airbrush issues trying to get a shiny paint job.

Anyway, here is the build log, starting back from November 2015:

Now I had originally decided to paint the car, that light shade of creamy light yellow as per the box art. Quite a hard colour to match!

Anyway, googling "1964 Ford Futura Yellow" gave this handy website with actual car body paint references.

Now running that image through the scalemodeldb paint conversion web page, gave Vallejo Ice Yellow as a decent match:

Eventually managed to get the shade of paint ordered by mail order, and arrived before xmas!

Anyway, fast forward to end of January 2016, and interior parts glued together:

5th Feb 2016, the vallejo model colour Ice Yellow Airbrushed on:



Unfortunately I found that the Vallejo model colour didn't airbrush well at all (perhaps I should have bought vallejo model air instead?). While the colour was a good match for the box art, the finish from the vallejo model colour was extremely gritty.

So I stripped the paint off and had a good think.

A spot of google image searches for 1964 Ford Falcon Futura cars, gave this example:



So I decided to paint mine with this colour scheme, abandoning the idea of the creamy yellow to match the box art.

Build date 28 Feb 2016. A few issues with airbrush meant I had several failed attempts at airbrushing the body shell. Stripped the model again, reprimed, and set the body shell aside.

Stripped the airbrush down, gave it a thorough clean, and managed to get the interior airbrushed Tamiya flat red:



29th Feb, managed to get the body shell airbrushed flat black, with flat red go faster stripe. Looked quite good at this stage:



13th March: Struggling to get a decent gloss coat. For some reason the alclad aqua gloss I airbrushed on dried in a rather gritty finish. I then further compounded this by brushing a few coats of Pledge Multi Surface wax on top:



Which led to the body shell being stripped yet again on the 16th March:

Anyway, I can probably fast forward a few months since that update dated feb 2016, and miss out several less than successful attempts at airbrushing tamiya gloss acrylics, and several failed attempts at brush painting a gloss coat (Pledge Multi Surface Wax) ontop of a flat paint job. and I can probably skip posting umpteen photos of airbrushed plastic spoons to dial in my airbrush.
It seems for my H&S ultra with 0.2mm needleset, thinning tamiya flat paints at 80% x20A to 20% paint works well at 15psi.

Anyway, I had to strip the kit yet again, and I reprimed it last night:



Now since I have a clean slate as it were, why not do a mix of tamiya acrylics using mk1 eyeball to get a close match to the box art.

It seems 3 parts tamiya white to 1 part tamiya lemon yellow is a pretty reasonable match. Not as good a match to the box art. But certainly a more pleasing mellow yellow, than if I painted the car using Tamiya Lemon Yellow. So now I'm back on the colour scheme I originally planned on way back in December 2015...

Sounds like the painting process has been giving you a hard time.

I rather liked the black and red. Looked pretty sharp. The yellow looks nice too though. I'm sure you'll get it done before Xmas. Just buckle down and do your best.

Managed to get a couple of coats of the mellow yellow I mixed airbrushed, ontop of an undercoat of tamiya flat white:



Might need another couple of coats though, as it is still a bit patchy in places.

But so far so good!

Interior seating painted flat black,and dry fitted. Going to give the interior a single coat of gloss coat, to give it a more leather like appearance.



But she's looking rather splendid in the pastel yellow colour. It may darken down once I give it a final coat of paint, then a gloss coat.

First couple of coats of alclad aqua gloss applied a few days ago, then micromeshed to get rid of slight orange peel

Going to get another coat of alclad aqua gloss, to hopefully get a nice shiny finish! Then a final one on top once I apply bare metal foil on the trim edges along the body work.

Looks like this build is coming along nicely now, after a bit of bother earlier on!

At long last, some decent progress!

Still some parts to add to the engine, but it looks good so far:



Not quite a showroom mirror shine from the Alclad Aqua Gloss, but I dare not risk polishing it any further in case I start to eat into the underlying paintwork:

At last, this kit seems to be progressing nicely!

Oh my eyes!!

That's enough bare metal foiling for this evening. Just the windscreen surround to do. Unfortunately I've scratched some of the yellow paint work while cutting the bare metal foil. Not too noticeable though.







I take it I should apply a gloss coat to seal the foil in place?

But I'm glad the kit is finally coming along nicely!

There seems to be a slight difference in the shade of yellow on the bodywork, and on the bonnet. This is despite priming using the same primer, and same undercoats. Not too noticeable, and I've gone too far along with this build to strip it again! So it'll do.

It looks great now after all that f.., messing about.
I haven't done a car yet, but have 2 waiting in line. you paint before sticking together? What glue do you use CA? Would that effect the paintwork? PVA? Would that hold it? Something else?

A small update, having given the wheel rims an enamel paint wash:





I tend to build what I can before painting. e.g. do the build and paint the interior, then paint the body shell. These will then fit together, using carefully applied c/a to avoid damaging the paint. For the glazing I use either pva glue or microscale micro crystal klear canopy glue.

The build is nearly finished, but a slight set back! I noticed a sticky fingerprint on the chrome bumpers, so wiped them down with an alcohol swab so I could get them fitted.

It seems the trumpeter chrome doesn't like alcohol, as I could see the chrome disappear before my eyes!!

So I've stripped them, and will prime and get them painted with gloss black acrylic, and I'll try chroming them with C1 Metaliser!

I did try brush painting gloss black enamel last night, but the paint seemed to pool away from the edges of the bumpers. Not sure that bare metal foil would work either due to the complex curves of the bumpers..

Nearly done! Ended up aclading the bumpers over alclad gloss black base. Shame the look more like gun metal, than the bright chrome of the rest of the kit. For a better match I probably should have stripped and alcladded the front and rear grilles. But I want to get this model finished soon, other wise I fear it'll end up on the shelf of doom for another 6 months!

How is that foil applied to the model or is it like gold leaf paper.

I used Bare Metal Foil, which is a very thin self adhesive metallic foil, which you carefully cut out, then apply and burnish down. I have found that it is quite fragile, not sure whether the foil isn't sticking well due to the gloss coat on the model. Perhaps it would have been easier to just mask of the bits I needed to chrome, and airbrush them with gloss black acrylic, then alclad. Still, at least the model is coming along now, and should be finished very soon.
