Thought i would share this with you, my very first bi-plane, have to say, really really enjoyed it, makes a nice change from the WW2 and Jets...Didn't have the bottle to rig it , just thought i'd see how I got on initially...
Think I will have a few more goes at these....love it.

Thanks guys for your kind words ...Mmm, maybe another cheap and try the rigging, then maybe a Wingnuts...any recommendations, or shall I keep with the "lower" end of the market until I get it perfected a bit...Thoughts would be appreciated guys.

May I suggest you order directly from WW Company in New Zealand...you will get a better price than on E bay, but the selection is only in production models.
I am dying for the Sopwith Camel coming out end of the year??.

@Glue bomb,the wings were airbrushed, using Mr Hobby, masking tape was placed along the ribs after the initial base colour, then sprayed with a mix of around 10% paint and 90% thinners ( slightly darker mix of base colour and a light brown/reddish mix) spayed in between the masking tape, waited until dry, them removed the masking tape..that should give that finish...hope this helps.

Found the tail section quite tricky, bit of a mess by the time I got it all stuck together! How you go ?

Glue bomb....Think I know where your coming from, I stuck the rear tail section on 1st, then glued the rudder on after that I think...Sure I painted the rudder first also...didn't bother with the decals, difficult to match the paint to the decals otherwise.
Hope thats what you are talking about, if not, completely ignore the first few sentences.

So after having a few thoughts on this subject, I thought maybe it was time to invest in one of these....

The instruction 'booklet' was in colour and super detailed with reference photos of the real thing




maybe I haven't purchased a high end Tamiya lately, but the WW's blew me away

And as a last note, scientific proof that a Beagle could never fly a Sopwith Camel

Maybe I have been spoilt on the high end Tamiya I guess...I agree, they are nicely presented. Just going to have to do it justice I guess...

WW is the leader for these kits and one of the few making them in this scale and detail.
I will have to put a high end Tamiya Aircraft kit on my Christmas list.

Hi again TKNS (?)...I have the Mustang and F16, which are built, will post couple of pics later, I have the Mossie, and Spitfire, and the Corsair in the stash, the Corsair is a really a time consuming kit (not built, but can tell it will be a long winded kit)...i'd go for the Mustang or Spitfire to be honest, roughly the same amount of spures.
Even with my skills, I think they have both turned out well (Mustang and F16)









And a comparison size wise...

All those are favourites, just a bit bigger scale than normal for me

Just be prepared to allow enough time, far more time consuming than the smaller stuff...detailing is just superb, so it makes you want to spend the time to do a great job, thats what I have found anyhow....get saving , but Christmas is not far off now

I have so many large scale auto builds, I am up to my eye balls!!!!
Will wait a few years until I thin the stash a bit I think, but you never know. If something goes on sale or shows up out of the blue. They are all on my radar now
You did a fantastic job on this WWI plane and I am sure the WW kit will be just as good

Nice build mate. Love these WW1 planes, used to build them as a teenager, got to the point of using stretched sprue for rigging.

I think at some point I'll have another go at building one.

I bought some fine white EZ Line last Hobby shop visit..just so no excuse to do a WWI build if it so happens to crop up in a sig or gb in 2017. Cannot wait for WingNut Wings' Camel

Like the paint job here. Like others have posted above EZ line is the way to go. Monofillament works too. What I would say is don't let rigging scare you. It's not my favorite thing to do either. But biplanes come alive with rigging. The nice thing about EZ line is it stretches and holds it's tension. It also looks in scale. Thread and other mediums tend to look out of scale. Stretched sprue works. But it's way more difficult for things other than antennae and such. EZ line is a little fiddly to work with though. I talk a little about it in the Salmson post and give a couple of suggestions on what worked for me.

Wingnut Wings are awesome. I don't say that lightly. They are the most fun I've had in years. They are hands down my favorite company right now. I adore Tamiya. But the journey through history that these kits take you through are worth every penny. Think of it like the fine wine of modeling or a Thanksgiving feast. The thing I love about them is that they look like you could crawl into them and take off when you are finished.

That being said, they are a lot of work. I don't recommend modelers attempting them until they feel they are ready. But they aren't as hard as you might think because the fit is gorgeous in them.

Not sure, I've had that thought. I have some biplanes I built about three years ago and they are holding up well.

@ Gazmat:-Regarding rigging, it really isn't as hard as you think with EZ line. I use the CA method, just dip the end of the line in a little CA and hold it in place until it sets. Some folk drill holes to put the stuff in which is fair enough, their kit etc but there's really no need to. Just don't overstretch it, you only need to stretch it so that it looks taught. The more you strecth it the more likely the glue will give way.
