Hi all, new member here! After a good many years out of the hobby I've started with the Airfix "Dogfight Doubles" kit which includes the Spitfire mk1a and Messerschmitt bf109e-4. So far I've built and painted the 109, and will clear coat and apply decals very soon hopefully. Let me know what you think of it so far, and I would be eager to hear of any simple tips to finish it off. It's pretty rough at the moment, but I'm pleased with how it's going.

Regarding the finishing of your model, I am not sure if you already clear coated, if yes you can try to give a nice wash, Ultimate ( Ultimate Modelling Products) washes are really good and there is a variety of colours that you can us.

Just to let you know Paul ,the person that dose the video and run this forum, is in the process of making a new series of videos, ISM Aircraft Techniques Guide Revisited 2016, with more advance and also revisited techniques, my personal advice is to go true the first video series "Aircraft Modelling Techniques",I find them really helpful, then move to the more advance, ISM Aircraft Techniques Guide Revisited 2016.

The first video for the "ISM Aircraft Techniques Guide Revisited 2016" is already out, I am not sure when the next one will be release, because of the massive work that there is behind each video, it might take some time between videos.

Thanks for all the info! The Ultimate washes look really good, I'll be sure to give them a try! I've subscribed to the YouTube channel too and will work my way through the video series, and no doubt pick up a lot of useful info from them.

Not a problem at all, Yes the Ultimate washes are really good and the videos are awesome.

So I spent a little while on the 109 yesterday evening, but didn't take a photo i'm afraid. First of all I re-painted the canopy frames as they were a mess before. I then did one coat of humbrol clear and plan to do the decals this evening. Would anyone recommend doing another coat of clear first?

My Ultimate "dark dirt" wash just arrived as well, so I'll test that out on an old broken Hurricane model that I usually use for testing techniques and products. I'm worried the dark dirt will be TOO dark, so might have to order a lighter one. Anyone have experience with that colour?

Just finished applying the larger decals, will tackle the tiny, fiddly ones another day! I used Micro Sol on all of them but they haven't quite gone into the panel lines like I expected them to. Anyway, here's a picture of the current state:

In an attempt to make the decals form to the panel lines I have just taken delivery of some Daco strong decal solution - fingers crossed this has a better effect on the fairly tough Airfix decals.

I'll test again on the old Hurricane too, although not sure if it has a different effect on decals that were applied years ago...anybody know?

Hi mate, yes also my self i find out that Micro sol and set sometimes doesn't work the magic, so when that happens I use Revel decal soft

And to be honest it works wonders for me. however when you see a decal not conforming to the panels try to reapply the Sol several times.
Also Paul motioned in one of his videos, when a decal doesn't set in the way he wants he uses the solvates.
